About This Pipe

The grandson of renowned artisans Poul Rasmussen and Anne Julie, Johannes 'Suhr' Rasmussen was born into pipe making, crafting his first pipe at age eight. With no formal schools for the craft, he trained under Tom Eltang, one of the world's leading pipe makers, through a connection made by his grandmother. Eventually, he became a full-time pipe maker in 2016, and his style is shaped by a life steeped in artisan pipe making and a passion for superior craftsmanship.

Suhr is no stranger to crafting the coveted Shield shape, first conceived by the late Swedish carving legend Bo Nordh, whose devotion to and mastery of reading briar grain were remarkable. That expertise is reflected in this particular rendition. Suhr used the block of briar to full advantage, showcasing a display of birdseye along the prominent forward wall, while the flanks are adorned with tendrils of striking cross grain. The forward momentum of the bowl carries through the composition, setting the shank-and-stem arrangement in a naturally comfortable posture.

The shank is extended with a piece of genuine horn, one of the finest I have encountered, its translucent hue revealing beautifully layered striations. Finally, all this exemplary grain is unified under one of Suhr's handsome contrast stains, reminiscent of Tom Eltang's celebrated finishes.
