About This Pipe
The grandson of Anne Julie and a former mentee of Tom Eltang, Johannes Rasmussen is the skilled artisan behind Suhr pipes. He began pipe making at an early age, crafting his first pipe at just eight years old. Such an auspicious start helps explain Rasmussen's mastery of the craft and his ability to create intricate, distinctive designs that are uniquely his own — yet clearly shaped by the rich artisan legacy he was born into.
The Ball is a distinctive design within the Apple family, defined by the fullness of its curves — the bowl nearly perfectly spherical. This example showcases that signature bowl, along with an outline reminiscent of Eltang's Eskimo: In profile, the shank appears slender, yet viewed from above, it reveals a surprising width. Firm ridgelines trace the sides of the shank and flow through the transition, gently touching the rear flanks of the bowl as if cradling it. The fully rounded bowl sits naturally in the hand, while the shank-and-stem alignment balances the form elegantly without diminishing the bowl's substantial presence. A rich, honey-hued smooth finish completes the pipe, accentuating the dense birdseye along the bowl's flanks and the striking cross grain that runs across the top, fore, and underside of the stummel.
