G. L. Pease - Westminster 2oz
Bon et sans chichi.
I’ve been smoking some great English blends lately—heavy hitters from G.L. Pease like Gaslight, Quiet Night, and Lagonda. I’ve spent my evenings parked in the old armchair on my porch, savoring and dissecting these fine blends. But today, I’m not looking for a head-spinner. I just want a quintessential, high-quality English blend that burns easily in my pipe for a daytime smoke. Something no-nonsense that I can puff on distractedly, only to be surprised halfway through the bowl by a sudden, pleasant aroma. Westminster is made for exactly that. A solid 4 stars, no question.
Cornell & Diehl - Opening Night 2oz
VS Union Square :)
It is quite similar to Union Square but ... if Union Square is white sugar cane, Opening Night is more brown sugar. Also Opening Night is more peppery, complex and vegetal. I can not say it is better, I also rated Union square at 5 ... but I have a very slight preference for Opening Night (because at the end of the box, after smoking Union Square 2 weeks I was a bit bored to it) In conclusion, I highly recommend. It is just a great virginia. This is the kind of virginia I love when I don't really like virginia like Peterson flake style for example.
G. L. Pease - Lagonda 2oz
Abingdon and Quiet night ?
At first, I can not say it is a bad blend. Once the tin is opened, you immediately recognize an Abingdon with its herbal character. It’s quite striking, and when you read the other reviews, other gentlemen here have noticed it as well. As the bowl progresses, you begin to feel a velvety taste that strongly reminds me of Quiet Nights, probably coming from the Virginia and the Latakia. To break that sweetness, this blend probably relies on the Orientals. I don’t regret my purchase — after all, it’s an experience, and it remains a good tobacco. But I prefer a pure Abingdon or a Westminster as an everyday tobacco and Quiet Nights for the evening, rather than something that sits in between the two.
G. L. Pease - Union Square 2oz
Ouhaaaaa
Again as I always say I am a newbie. About Pure Virginia, I only tried Peterson flake before. I thought Union Square would be a bit bitter, hard to smoke because there is not any topping ... well, I was completely wrong. It burns very easily, it is naturally sweet. With some clear honey and hay flavor. I precise the box was 4 years old. I just smoked my first bol and I may be a bit too enthusiastic, I will edit if my mind change. But ouhaaaaaaa, this was a great surprise.
G. L. Pease - Abingdon 2oz
After one full box ...
I’m a newbie in the pipe world, but I’ve been studying a lot. This is my first Balkan. The smoke is rather dry, but the flavor is fantastic. I get strong Oriental notes with a pine-like character, and the Latakia is not overwhelming at all. In fact, the Virginia is quite noticeable, and about halfway through the tin you can really taste the sweetness. I should mention that the tin I bought was aged, and the bottom was slightly bulged. However, when smoked with a Peterson P-Lip, the smoke becomes almost too dry and tends to bite the palate. I really enjoyed this tobacco, but I’m curious: would the experience have been the same with a fresh tin?
Peterson - Flake 50g
Newbie in Virginia
To be honest I just bought it because I've been told it is a good virginia flake to break in new pipes dedicated to virginia blends. And it is true, It burns easily and consistently. Actually it burns not so hot. I did not have high expectation, my target is FVF or HH mc Barren, not available in my town ... BUT it is actually an OK tobacco. I can taste hay and sweet citrus quite a lot. My conclusion : not real complain, it did exactly what I wanted too, smoking easely to prepare my new pipes to new virginia and giving me some time to learn slow smoking because if you smoke it to fast, it becomes really bitter. However, since I tried Union Square, I am sure that I will not buy Peterson Flake again.
G. L. Pease - Quiet Nights 2oz
More balanced and sweet that Night Cap
Very latakia but more "civilised" than a Night Cap, not better just very different. Night Cap bites this one cuddles. However tend to become a bit dusty when I prepare the bowl even though I stored it correctly.
Peterson - De Luxe Navy Rolls 50g
Refined, sophisticated.
A great VaPer. Perique is clearly present but not brutal as a (delicious too) Bayou Morning Flake. I am still newby, exploring all the blends but this one : I really loved it and it was good that I could compare it with another Vaper (BayoU) It was crazy how I was counting the rolls left in the box until I finish the box. I will certainly buy another one.
Peterson - My Mixture 965 50g
Not a classic smoky English blend
Not a classic English blend. It is quite sweet despite the latakia. Will I buy it again ? No. Do I regret my experience no, it is good and very easy to smoke but I want to discover something else. Edit : actually after smoking different blends like Gaz Light, Quiet Night or Lagonda, I realised that a simple easy going and welcoming English blend can have a great value. I admit, I will buy it again.
