Smokingpipes University: Ready-Rubbed Tobacco

Today I'm gonna be discussing what I think is probably the most underrated cut in the tobacco world: ready-rubbed tobacco, or as we call it here, particularly when we're talking about C&D, chop block.

Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.

There's some confusion around what the differences are between a regular ribbon cut and a ready-rubbed cut. Ready-rubbed varies depending on the manufacturer. Some manufacturers actually set aside a portion of their flake production. They'll make the full production of flake and then they'll set some aside to then be tumbled, tossed, or rubbed out by hand so that they get more of a ribbon-like consistency.

Pressed Tobacco

The actual difference here is that, unlike ribbon cuts, chop block or ready rubbed has actually been pressed. The pressing time can vary also by manufacturer but some folks will press a flake for about a week, some longer, and then you have other manufacturers that actually set out to create ready rubbed, which has its own unique process.

At C&D, for example, ready rubbed is pressed for a little over a day, and what that allows it to do is to marry the flavors, affording a cooler and longer smoking cadence than you would typically get from a pressed product. Since it's only in the press for around a day, the actual product is far less dense and it's much easier to work with afterwards.

That's why I really like ready rubbed; you do get most of the benefits of a pressed product. The longer that you press something, the more intense those flavors, highlights, and base notes are gonna be.

Ready-Rubbed Cut Attributes & Examples

There's something really cool about a chop block or ready rubbed. You really do get some of that pressed character but it's also super easy to prepare for the pipe. It doesn't take a very long time to rub out or dry out because it's far less dense, so it's really easy to pack in the pipe. It's really easy to travel with but you're still getting that full tobacco experience with some of the pressed benefits.

There are a handful of true ready-rubbed, chop-block products out there. You can find them on-site at Smokingpipes through our search feature. You can also go down into the broken flake category, which often is just ready-rubbed tobaccos.

We've got C&D's Derringer , which is an exceptional blend. It has been pressed a little bit and rubbed out. You're getting a lot of those Bright Virginia notes but there is something deeper there because of the pressing process. It's a really neat blend.

On the other end of the spectrum here, we've got Per Jensen's Harbour Dreams, which of course is a very sophisticated Danish-American, ready-rubbed Aromatic. It's interesting to see a straight Virginia blend and then also an Aromatic blend both using this chop-block character and how it changes in both of those expressions.

That's a recap of what I think is one of the most underrated tobacco cuts: chop block or ready rubbed. Make sure you go try some out from on-site today. Drop us a note in the comments letting us know what your favorite cut is and what you think of ready rubbed.
