ey is the main flavor. Flavor-wise, the Virginia is like a condiment in Pegasus, adding just a little hint of natural sweetness (not too much). Speaking of sweetness, the Black Cav. in Pegasus is unsweetened, so it doesn't stifle or overwhelm the other flavors, nor make it too sweet, and it's used sparingly—just a few flecks here and there. I get an ever-so-slight taste of honey and cocoa, even vanilla. These flavors are so faint that this could simply be the [wonderful] interplay between the tobaccos. Pegasus won't bite unless pushed real hard, which is a nice trait in any Burley blend. Medium on the nicotine front. Bob was a genius blender, and I'm so glad that C&D carries on his legacy by continuing to make Pegasus. I hope they keep it up! Read Less

bonated tingle on the retro - I can’t seem to put this stuff down. Tasty doesn’t even scratch the surface. I’m puffing on a bowl right now in my Country Gentleman, and nothing could wipe the grin off my face for the next half-hour. No, it’s not very complex, but it does not need to be - everything is in perfect proportion. Yes, it can be a bit rough, but it’s raw and I love it. hat classic C&D strong bitter earthy walnut note (young white burley?) that really dominates so many of their burley blends is finally tamed thank God. I find the bitter note really offputting if too strong. This wasn't an issue for Pegasus. The Cavendish, Virginia and topping seem to add enough sweetness to balance Pegasus perfectly. The Virginia also adds a notes of grass and hay. The cavendish smooths out the burleys even more, filling in all gaps with a little dark sugar. Good candidate for an all day smoke. but after hearing what he had to say, I started all over. I grabbed a favorite Savinelli Spring 614 and loaded up using conventional packing technique and lit up…a charring light that I let die before a light swirling tamp and relight. I spent over an hour smoking it to the bottom and relit several times as I didn’t feel like hurrying through this delicious Burley blend. I concluded that I’d hit on the right combination and enjoyed several relights, each tastier than the last. I’ve been trying to find something that beat some old favorites like PA of which there are no substitutes…I’ve been a pipe smoker for over 50 years and have smoked more different blends than I can recall but always lean towards Burleys as I enjoy the depth of flavor and ease of smoking them…if you do it right, they don’t bite thus, Take your time…Pegasus showcases Runowskis knowledge of building a good blend and how to smoke it for best effect. A rich flavorful taste with depth and jus the right strength to satisfy. At 78 I suppose I’m a true codger but good Burley blends are good smoking and worth your time so Take your time and enjoy this one. Read Less

Another excellent Runowski blend. This burley treat has plenty of cavendish to help grant a sweet and mellow flavor. The burleys are top notch, providing a nice, buttery texture and nutty taste. A great all day blend!

My beef here is that I think the Cavandish is overpowering the burley's nutty flavor that I love so much. Pegasus has a "chewy mouth feel", Brie with ammonia, & seemed a bit harsh and bitey.

the woody sweetness and the dryness of the smoke. I can’t stand getting a mouthful of backwash from too moist tobacco. I also like the clean aftertaste when I’m done with a bowl. Many aromatics leave a cloying bleech after smoking. Even latakia will leave an aftertaste with some of the stronger English/Balkan blends. Not Pegasus. This is definitely worth a try. Read Less

he more sharp but sweet hay-like note of Virginia. This ying/yang thing on a VA/BUR mix in which one picks up where the other falls down, translates to a solid, consistent depth of flavor, body and mechanics.
There’s a good dose of sweetness; a smooth, malty, toasted and oat-like nuttiness from the 3 burleys which play all along the spectrum from light to dark burley flavors. Intermittently, there’s a sharpness (not roughness) that breaks the monotony. The Virginias are balanced in citrusy sweetness/tartness and the temperate, earthy hay-like note of the two Virginia leaf is idyllic and perfectly balanced with the woody burleys. The virginia remain in the background at first, and progressively get stronger until the end, at which time they step forward to mitigate the ashiness often associated with Burley. The Cavendish helps to tone down any high notes between the two contrasting leaf types and lends a smooth semi sweet quality to an already tranquil blend. Good finish... not the best I've experienced, but it's certainly one of the better ones. The retro reminds you that this mixture is moderate in strength and full in body – a quality C&D is known for and I love it. The nicotine is squarely in the middle; it will satisfy most by the end of the session and perhaps more by mid bowl. Read Less

to offer to the blend. I’m a fan of good American burley blends, and savor the nuttiness and caramel/cocoa notes inherent in them, but Pegasus unfortunately lacks those burley flavors. It harkens to Carter Hall or Prince Albert, so fans of those OTC blends should also be fans of Pegasus. I’ll stick with my Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic. nto the second third of the bowl, the Virginia's came through with grassy/hay notes, the creaminess still lingering, with a touch of nuttiness. Every single puff brings something new. The black cavendish likes to creep in and tickle your pallet every so often providing a beautiful contrast to the flavors throughout the bowl. An amazing blend! Reminiscent of Haunted Bookshop, yet the "musty" and bold flavors present in that blend, are replaced with smooth creaminess up front and subtle sweetness bringing up the rear. The black cavendish brings the depth to this blend I believe. Everything flows together like paths through the mountains or fish through the rivers. The retrohale adds to the peppery flavor, not like a perique, but just adds some spice to the nostrils while leaving the creaminess from the Virginia's on your tongue. Mild to in-between mild and medium in nicotine strength id say. Virtually no tongue bite. Unless your chugging along, you should be good on that front. Could be a new favorite! So, for me this tobacco is 3 stars max, and I'll not come to it again, but, just out of trying to be more objective, I give it 3,5, cause it's still smokable and may taste even great for someone.

I can't put my finger on the casing, it's very subtle, not aromatic at all, just enhances the natural tobacco flavors. The room note isn't half bad either. Very nutty and light. The cavendish starts to wilt and taste muddy a bit early, but that's my only gripe. Read Less

The flavor begins right upon the char light and is sustained throughout the bowl: pure burley nuttiness with a bit of sweetness from the Virginias, and mellowed by the Black Cavendish. It’s not as strong, nutty, or nicotine-rich as Runowski’s Old Joe Krantz, but it’s a notch milder and thus for many, easier to puff. You just might feel like you’re flying, coasting through the air, like the mythological centaur that gives the blend its name. The late Bob Runowski effected this by employing several weapons in his blending arsenal: three burleys, two Virginias and then of course, a touch of Black Cavendish. nd falls right in line with those venerable old classic American O.T.C. tobaccos. The only difference is I think this stuff is a little smoother and it's probably the addition of the black cavendish. When I started smoking a pipe in my teens, I smoked what my dad smoked...I think a lot of us older pipe smokers started that way, so I'm no stranger to burly based tobaccos. This blend is not one of my all day smokes but it is a nice change of pace when I'm feeling a little nostalgic, and I can say with all honesty, that this is a damn good one. It burns clean and consistent from start to finish and never really overpowers the smoker. While it can be a little harsh at times, if you are not careful, it has a quality that only an old fashion pipe tobacco can give...it is satisfying like a good cigar and goes well with a nice strong cup of evening coffee. I will definitely keep this on hand right next to my Match Edgeworth Ready Rubbed. Read Less
