Perique is a special spice tobacco originating from St. James Parish, Louisiana, the only place where it is made. Compressed, heated, and fermented, the result is a strong peppery/fig flavor. It's worthwhile noting that, due to its length, this particular cut of the condiment leaf can be difficult to blend and shouldn't be used unless called for in specific recipes.

Back in the early 80s we had a family friend in the shipping industry, who used travel the Gulf Coast from Port Arthur to Tampa, and he would bring plug-like chunks of Saint James Perique (along with packs of Picayune cigarettes!) back from his trave... Read Morels. That tobacco used to come in a big, pressed cake-like brick, with stems included, and we would cut it using a kitchen knife on a cutting board. Smoked it straight, or mixed with Granger Burley blend. This C&D long cut is as close to that as I have found. Plenty moist, and has the fermented scent, which always makes me think of old wood pilings in salt water. This smokes a lot smoother than I remember the raw Perique did, and seems to have less of a nicotine kick...and you dont have to pick out the stems! Bought an oz to try, and will likely get a lb next order to cellar and smoke. Been smoking this straight in a new Meer, and am thinking of trying some blending. Short of going to the source, this is the best pure Perique option available right now. Also available in a granulated cut, which may be more suited for blending...might need to get a can of Granger too! Read Less
I order this to blend with other tobaccos just to add a little kick to them, once in awhile i'll just stuff a pipe full and puff on it....As for a review: The cut is obviously a long, stringy cut, VERY moist. After 30+ years smoking cigarettes I switched to pipes about 3 months ago. In that time I tried all kinds of aromatics and loved them, but I just wasn't getting the nicotine kick I was after. Well it got here today and I immediately packed a couple of healthy pinches into a little clay pipe and fired it up. WOW. It smells just like whatever my grandfather smoked. Which is a good thing. And the nicotine experience will surely please you. First time you try it, it could very well feel like your first time, so make sure you're sitting down. And be careful not to accidentally inhale, like I did.
I'll be buying more for sure. This evening I'm going to create a 50/50 blend of this stuff, and Briar Works Peach Cobbler, just for fun. But for first thing in the morning, when I need to wake up and get motivated, I'm going to go full strength. Five Stars, just for nicotine content. Thanks Sam. Read Less
All these tobacco descriptions say "for blending" ..not sure why. Straight perique is amazing on its own, thos particular perique is exactly as described, peppery and full flavored. Perique has become my full evening g pipe
Good for adding some 🌶 to your blends.
I’ve tried to smoked it alone two or three times, not extremely extremely strong, but you don’t get the good taste you can get out of this fellow.

I get whole leaf perique straight from St. James Parish, and C&D’s longcut perique is every bit as good. The fermenty, mushroomy, earthy aroma is unlike anything else.
