The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.
A medium-strength, classic flake built on a base of bright Virginias, with some added Burley and an aromatic casing.

uld impart. Meanwhile, the toppings are strong enough to compete without being overpowering. This might be the first tobacco I’ve tried where the aromatic topping seems to become stronger in taste as you keep smoking (rather than becoming the “hot air” I typically associate with late-pipe aromatics). Maybe a unique quality of tonquin bean essence? I’m not even sure the Lakeland essence is my favorite (the jury’s still out on how much I like the powdery floral flavor) but it’s to the great credit of Gawith Hoggarth that I enjoyed this so much regardless. I had it with a maple cookie and the combination was divine. This is a true delight....Read More
