1/20/22- Just an update, just 4 months shy of a year, I went for a bowl of rum flake. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a bowl as I’ve been on a major English/ Balkan craze. Anyway, this blend has gotten so much richer resting in a jar. The rum, and maple are upfront, especially upon retro hale. I also get the anise/licorice flavor as well at the very back end and it’s very subtle, but very nice and welcomed. I’m mad I only got two tins when it was in stock, but I don’t like to be greedy :)

Bulk purchase. Sweet smelling flake. Hints of maple. Rubbed out or stuffed, this burns forever. I sometimes detect only the slightest of Lakeland essence but I primarily get the sweet sugar, some maple and a bit of rum. This is a fantastic smoke.

The rum and vanilla are prominent in the beginning, loosing intensity very quickly, settling down in the middleground. The licorice seems to be occupying the background. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of sour vegetation, maple, lemon grass, rum, vanilla, wood, spices, floral, leather, molasses, tangy dark fruit, earthy, brown sugar, nutty, hay, cocoa, mild licorice, mildly spicy, a rich savory sweet bready background note, and a peppery retro. ro, but one that smokes like a non-aro. Neither the Virginia nor the burley takes center stage, but, true to the advertising on the packaging, they blend harmoniously like a seductive and well-choreographed dance. It doesn’t get much closer to perfect than this.

e "old world" flavors, rum, and is mildly sweet (read: sweet for GH). I didn't realize there was maple sugar in it until I had some that was aged for three years; the maple topping is very subtle when fresh. It comes out even more when it's aged for ~6 months or more. While there is definitely a small amount of Lakeland essence, it's just barely there. This flake will likely agree with those who're on the fence about the Lakeland essence. The one and only thing I wish they'd do with this blend, is to let it age a bit before sending it out. The maple flavor comes through in full force when given some time in the cellar, and it's one of the most satisfying smokes I've ever had. All the same, it's a fine smoke when it's fresh, but it goes from fine to incredible with some age—a truly amazing transformation. Read Less

I strongly disagree with some reviews I've read (tobaccoreviews.com and elsewhere) describing Rum Flake as simply Rum Twist in flake form: The two are worlds apart in terms of constituents, taste, burning characteristics and, to some extent, strength. I prefer rubbing the tobacco out (or chopping it up a little in my coffee grinder - which is useless as a coffee grinder but the best tobacco grinder the makers have ever invented) before smoking. Although the flake is nice and moist, I find I don't have to dry it out at all before smoking, although, perhaps as a consequence of this, I find that it can smoke a little hot; however, I have not yet been bitten by it at all. The only reason this tobacco does not get the full 5 stars is that the already mentioned Gawith & Hoggarth twists have become the yardstick against which I measure all other tobaccos; and this one, good as it is, is not quite up there. Flake being no exception. Unlike some of their offerings, Rum Flake isn't cigar-like at all. To the uninitiated, the name would have you thinking that it's going taste like rum, but it really doesn't. As with most all G.H.&Co. blends, the nicotine level is noticeable, but in this case it's not overwhelming or even high (about 6 out of 10). Tongue bite potential is minimal. What a great blend, and the broken flake is excellent. Not wet or sticky, nice to rub out or fold. Flavor of rum and vanilla, nutty, and slighlty sweet. Sip it like a fine wine or fine bourbon. Very high quality and consistant.

rk-Fired? The VA is good, but there's very little by proportion. If you want a good Rum-topped burley/virginia, look to C&D's Redburn. Seriously, C&D is unmatched when it comes to toppings. This one has more anise (a common component I'm finding in all of G&H's offerings), and I don't taste any rum. There's better burley/VA flakes out there, namely from Mac Baren.
