Good for beginners because 1-Q doesn't take a lot of fuss to enjoy. It's a good one with which to learn to pack a pipe because I've always found it easy to light and also forgiving if I don't get the pack quite right, and we do tend to learn from our mistakes where packing a pipe is concerned. And, you'll get a good Virginia tobacco flavor along with the light sweetness of the casing.
Good for advanced pipe smokers too because, having worked at a local tobacconist for a couple of years after college, this was far and away our best seller to young and old pipe smokers as well as our most common ingredient in blending. It's a smooth, lightly sweet flavored tobacco without being overpowering on the tongue. That light sweetness feels natural to the tobacco too, not heavy as with some other cased products like the cherry or whiskey flavored aromatics, nothing against them. An excellent choice with which to begin your pipe smoking odyssey, and you'll likely return to it again and again as well, as one does with an old and trusted friend.
P.S. My own experience was that once I wanted to expand my palate and choices, a good place to go from Lane's 1-Q was to try McClelland 2010, followed by McClelland 2000....Read More

But holy smokes, that room note? It’s straight-up magical. It smells exactly like the warm, comforting pipe tobacco I remember from childhood. It’s the kind of scent that makes people actually happy you’re smoking. I can’t wait to light this up around the family and watch their faces light up.
So while the flavor gets a respectable “meh, it’s fine,” the room note gets a standing ovation. If you want your house to smell like everyone’s favorite grandpa, this is your tobacco.

A Consistent Classic

I figured I'd finally give it go.
Out of the bag it smells very good! To me, it smells like marshmallows or like a vanilla w/ light caramel. It was a little wet/moist so I expected that it would be difficult to light and have that artificial casing taste that other "beginner"/drugstore aromatics have, but was pleasantly surprised. It is easy to light, and stays lit and did not have that strong artificial/chemical taste. Vanilla/caramel flavor is present and tobacco flavor is very light. I really expected more of a bite from this blend, but it really wasn't a problem for me. The tobacco burned to a nice white ash and did not leave the pipe bowl overly sticky. All in all I can see why this blend is as popular as it is. It tastes good, smells good, inexpensive, better than any other drugstore blend, and nearly as accessible/available to folks. I was pleasantly surprised by this classic blend and I will likely always have a bit on hand for light smokes and for social gatherings....Read More
