Samuel Gawith: Squadron Leader 50g Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-059-0001

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Squadron Leader from Samuel Gawith is a classic, quintessential English blend named in honor of the Royal Air Force pilots who flew Gloster Gladiator biplanes in the early days of WWII. As a pipe tobacco, Squadron Leader features Bright and Dark Virginias bcombined with Latakia and Turkish leaf for a cool, all-day English mixture.

Good For a new pipe smoker
May 10, 2025
Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 50g
It is well balance, with no one component overpowering the others, as one reviewer has already stated.

Also, it has a low nicotine hit.

I give it a 4 star because it is sold too wet, but you can set half of it on a paper towel for 4 to 6 hours and re-jar all of it, to get a less goopy
bowl. A pity, because you do loose some volatile aspect that goes away as you dry.

Maybe the packagers do this because the tin barely holds moister over time.

Solid English Blend

Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 50g
I really enjoyed this English blend. It’s light and easy smoking. I’m more of an aromatic guy, but I’ve been venturing into other blends/types and really enjoyed this one. It also has a very pleasant and natural room note. If your looking to try a new English blend, give this one a try....Read More
I just don’t like it!

Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 50g
I tried to like it. I really did. Many people sing its praises. I am an English guy. But I like my englishes latakia forward. This one is very oriental forward. Some varietals of orientals are fantastic and really add some complimentary piquancy to an English blend. But this oriental has a weird buttery twang to it that is a real put off for me! Apparently many people like that taste. But it’s not for me. Sorry brother pipe smokers. I respect your taste if like this one, but you can keep it....Read More
Excellent all day smoke

Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 50g
This blend is not overly complex, but in a good way. It's not a morning or evening blend. It strikes a wonderful balance of that SG Virginia taste, beautiful smokiness from the latakia (but not overly so), and a pleasant hint of that incense aroma from the Orientals. No leaf overpowers another. One of my favorite English blends. Highly recommend trying at least once....Read More

The definition of an English mixture. Not overly loaded with latakia. Definitely an all day smoke. Can get a little boring. Quality tobacco. Recommended.

Very Light English
December 12, 2022
Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 50g
Just cracked another tin of this and realized I haven't rated it. Honestly, it's not worth the price. There are SO MANY light english blends available at a MUCH lower price. The quality is good, but so Cornell and Diehl. The latakia is used lightly in this and so it's very complimenting of the VA and Orientals, which lead the way in a sweet/sour/wood/verdant way. It's a three star blend and so perhaps a smidgeon above average due to quality, but the price drops it a star. Nicotine is 2 out of 5....Read More
Fine English Blend
January 29, 2023
Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 50g
A finely blended English with just the righ amounts of Latakia and Orientals to provide the wonderful flavors for English tobacco. A hint of sweet from the Virginia with a slight nutty flavor, and tastes of orientals. The ribbon cut on this is excellent and the tin is pack tight. A great intorduction to English. I call this a Gentleman's tobacco with the refinements in flavors from strength to room note ot flavor. Great for all day smoking....Read More
Magnífico tabaco, mala calidad de empaque.
January 25, 2023
Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 50g
