e pipe. As much as I tried, I did not find any of their blends palatable. Many were sickeningly sweet, and I found their 965 too peppery.
When I visited home in Queens over a break, I visited Nat Sherman in Manhattan. When I complained of my situation to Joel, the proprietor, he plied me with questions to establish my tastes. When he learned that I leaned quite heavily to maduro cigars, he thoroughly recommended I try one of the house blends: Nat Sherman Empire English. He explained that its burleys were grown in the same location as the fine Mexican maduros that adorned the same cigars I admired, such as Te Amo and some other brands that elude me. Along with my cigar purchase, he added a few ounces of his Nat Sherman Empire English for me to give a try.
Honestly, up to that point, I was reluctant to try any English blends, but once I did, I always found myself gravitating to the Nat Sherman Empire English. It was velvety smooth, with just enough Latakia for you to appreciate, but not enough to dominate the smoke. It was exceptionally well blended, definitely a gourmet blend, if there is such a thing. It was the perfect companion for poring over my professional research, composing articles for academic journals, or grading late night essays.
As one might relate, life is long and unpredictable, with many twists and turns, and I now find myself in an empty house. While I had not smoked a pipe in close to 30 years, I found myself longing for that blend. Unfortunately, Nat Sherman has long since shut its doors, so I found myself in a quest to find a close duplicate.
While I did find several noteworthy blends, none came close to that velvety smoothness that Nat Sherman possessed. Fortunately, I still have the remnants of a 1-pound bag in one of my cigar humidors that I use for comparison, but I am too afraid to exhaust that supply until I discover a worthy replacement.
I do not remember how I came across it, but recently I tried a sample of Stokkebys’s PS17 English Luxury. The familiarity came across doubtful at first, but there is no denying that this is an excellent duplicate of that Nat Sherman blend. Perhaps it is the same blend market to Nat Sherman to sell in their stores, certainly seems identical to me. While it is not a potent latakia powerhouse many of you adherers brag about, it is not a mild aromatic either. Just a brilliant blend creating a velvety smooth smoke akin to a fine single malt scotch.

What a great blend

I loved this. Absolutely loved it. Another review called it a great introduction to English blends, and I have to say, it made a convert out of me. I really thought English blends weren’t my thing, but I’ve completely changed my mind. This may be one of my new favorites. What a joy.
