About This Pipe
Jody Davis is an award-winning musician and renowned pipe maker. Davis' portfolio exhibits both American and Danish influences, with plenty of compact yet muscular designs that showcase refined, practical shaping. While he pulls from several different schools of design, Davis has cultivated a style that's uniquely his own and beloved by many, and this paneled Horn is a prime example of that style.
Showcasing a striking medley of tones and textures, and replete with dynamic, precise line work, this Horn offers a deeply refreshing take on the classic shape that transcends into entirely new territory while still retaining subtle hints of the shape-chart standard. The flaring, forward-canted bowl is quite geometric, with a trapezoid-shaped rim, yet the ridgelines that inform said rim are actually quite fluid and organic in profile, imbuing the stummel with a sweeping, gestural curve as they travel uninterrupted from the curling shank to the fore of the bowl. The shank's curling momentum is continued by the shoulders of the half-saddle stem, which is highly stylized and shows off Davis' penchant for crafting split stems; this one features a striking combination of cocobolo and jet-black vulcanite. Speaking of striking combinations, the panels on this Horn alternate between a smooth, chestnut finish and a dark, smoky sandblast, enhancing this pipe's already highly dynamic appearance.
