About This Pipe
Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans, but a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2025, the theme of our Expo is "In Memoriam," celebrating the life and works of artisans who have passed on, yet whose impact on the craft and those around them is utterly undeniable.
Giacomo Penzo, the maker behind G. Penzo pipes, has chosen to honor Paolo Becker as his tribute for this year's Global Pipe Making Exposition. Early in his career, Paolo Becker made classic, English-style pipes such as those seen from Musico — initially a joint venture between Giorgio Musico and Paolo and Fritz Becker. Later in his career, Paolo started veering off more into Freehand territory. He took Freehand work in a new, innovative direction, making shapes no one else thought of or made. Pickaxes, Cherrywoods, and Tomatos with pinched shanks abounded throughout his portfolio, and he became known for using the pinched shank to great effect.
While it was not a shape that Becker ever made, this Maple Seed from G. Penzo looks as though it could have been made by the Italian great himself. In particular, Penzo's Exposition pipe shares a lot of similarities with some of Becker's Tomato renditions, especially when viewed from the side. Becker's Tomatos often had relatively flat heels and long, stretched out bowls with shortened front walls and tall back walls to exaggerate the forward cant. This Maple Seed hearkens back to this unusual Tomato shape, but with a bowl whose cant is more exaggerated, with an even lower front wall that blends into the heel and a flatter, almost horizontal back wall. The pipe isn't very large, but its modest size belies a surprisingly capacious chamber. Not only is this chamber a formidable two inches deep, but the bowl's deep forward cant positions it at a comfortable angle for lighting the tobacco within.
The shank end's flare is less pronounced than that of many of Becker's pipes, giving it a more circular appearance to better evoke the eponymous seed's shape. A dark, almost black horn accent adorns the shank end. Its lenticular cross section echoes that of the bowl when viewing it from above — a nice addition of symmetry to a pipe that doesn't initially look very symmetrical. Another shaping cue that mimics Paolo Becker's style is the vulcanite stem's slender base. Said stem's brindled pattern harmoniously echoes the gorgeous rays of flame grain fanning across the stummel.
Penzo has included a gorgeous briar tamper with the pipe. Its shape mimics that of the stummel, with the sandblasted texture adding a nice, naturalistic element. The shaping is so accurate that the seed looks ready to take off spinning through the air like a real life maple seed. With this pipe and tamper set, Penzo has added his own creative flair to Paolo Becker's style while demonstrating a thorough understanding of it. This is a gorgeous, truly one-of-a-kind tribute to the late Italian legend.
