About This Pipe
Scott Thile's self-described style can be summed up as "Danish neoclassics as interpreted by the North American greats." With his years of experience — some as an autodidact and some under the mentorship of Bruce Weaver and Todd Johnson — it's safe to say that Thile has carved out a space of his own among the North American greats.
This Billiard from Thile has a rather Lovat-esque profile, with a lengthy shank-and-stem arrangement offering ample room to comfortably drape a digit. Whereas Lumbermans feature short saddle stems, this Billiard has a more proportional stem in comparison to the length of the shank. There's also a greater balance between the height of the bowl and the length of the shank, with the former housing a moderately sized chamber suited for a plethora of blends and occasions. The stummel wears a rugged sandblast that draws out the briar's dense, rippling waves of ring grain in vivid tactile detail. The shoulders of the jet-black saddle stem feature a band of Ivorite, which adds an elegant pop of contrasting lightness against the pipe's otherwise dark, rich palette.
