About This Pipe
Jeff Gracik started making pipes as many do, with a few hobby-grade briar blocks, some preformed stems, and a couple of hand tools. He quickly fell in love with the art form and in 2003, Jeff Gracik started J. Alan Pipes and the workshop soon became one of America's premier names in pipe making. J. Alan pipes typically exhibit the graceful, soft contours of Danish pipe making while utilizing clean, streamlined finishes, often forgoing accents. However, when J. Alan pipes embrace creative forms, dramatic finishes, and exotic accents, they use them to great effect.
Although the Calabash is traditionally a relatively straightforward shape, consisting of a hollow, curved gourd stummel with a removable chamber cap, J. Alan transforms it into something far more deliberate and sculptural. His version replaces the classic gourd with briar, incorporates an Ivorite chamber cap, and adopts a sleeker, modernist look in profile. This cap and chamber cool the smoke inside the vast internal condensation chamber, producing an impeccably dry smoke. The sinuous curve of the stummel is complemented by a deeply bent vulcanite stem that promotes a comfortable smoking posture. This piece also highlights Alan's ability to read a block of briar, as cross grain perfectly aligns with the stummel's tapering flanks, while the underside features a vast field of delicate birdseye. Lastly, this piece is complete with an extra cap made of mallee burl, which showcases its own beautiful grain, giving the lucky owner the option to switch between caps.
