About This Pipe
Widely regarded as one of North America's most accomplished pipe makers, Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes is known for his refined shaping skills, beautiful finish work, and exceptional overall craftsmanship. This bent Apple from Gracik showcases all three of the aforementioned qualities, and is sure to make a fine addition to any collection of quality smoking instruments.
"Contrast" is the word that immediately comes to mind when looking at this bent Apple — not just because of the exceptional contrast sandblast, but also because of the juxtaposition of plump, organic forms and structured, almost geometric lines. The latter can be observed in profile, in the negative space surrounding the tight-knit transition, as well as along the crisp edges of the shank face. Up front, the shaping is much more supple and organic, with the bowl taking the form of a charmingly robust Apple.
Stunning grain and a vibrant auburn contrast blast unite bowl and shank, with only the teardrop-shaped shank face left smooth for yet another kind of contrast. The shank face showcases tight tendrils of cross grain, while the high-contrast sandblast on the rest of the stummel emphasizes the interplay between vertical flame grain and concentric ring grain, as well as some particularly dense birdseye sweeping along the underside. A brassy inlay and one of Gracik's fine, handmade stems tops off the composition, promising a comfortable, satisfying smoking experience befitting such a beautifully made piece.
