About This Pipe

Chris Askwith started smoking pipes in 2006 and soon after began restoring estate pipes and attending meetings of the UK's South West Pipe Club. There he met Paul Hubartt of Larrysson Pipes, whose tools Chris used to make his first Askwith pipes before investing in his own tools and a home workshop. Chris still makes his pipes in his hometown of Plymouth, England. In addition to briar, Chris often uses morta, or oak that has fallen into peat bogs and been preserved over time. He also handcrafts colorful stems from a wide variety of materials, including polyester, horn, and cumberland.

This bent Dublin of Chris' making has a craggy rustication and a very dark stain dressing the stummel, giving it a natural feel and sleek appearance. The heel is heavily pointed before the curve of the fore takes over, and the bowl is slightly ovoid, with the briar at bit longer at the aft and fore than on the flanks. The straight lines of the shank fade easily into the green and black polymer of the stem, which takes up much of the pipe's span, allowing the entire pipe to weigh in at less than one and one-quarter ounces. At once handsome and daring, Chris' handiwork will appeal to any fan of fine rustication, unique shaping, and colorful stems.
