Partially Sandblasted Volcano (B) Tobacco Pipe

Massimiliano "Max" Rimensi began working with wood in his uncle's shop at age 14, giving him a fascination with carpentry that preceded the purchase of his first pipe. It was in that same shop that Max made his first pipe, the result of which didn't satisfy him but the process of which enthralled him. Though located in Occhiobello, southwest of Venice near Italy's Adriatic coast, Max's fanciful shapes take inspiration from all over, crafted with briar he lets dry for years before shaping.

This Volcano from Max is sandblasted above the ridgeline that separates the heel and bowl, with the heel smoothly finished to allow the smoker to appreciate swirling curlicues of birdseye. Up top, the waves of sandblast are darkly stained for an elegant appearance and rich touch to the stummel, which is fronted by the classically shaped cone typical of Volcano pipes. The upturned shank flares outward slightly near the junction with the stem, which is made of vulcanite and bends minutely on its way to the bit. It's an extraordinary rendition of a classic shape, its lines drawn with a sense of playfulness and its finish completed with a beautiful contrast.
