About This Pipe
Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2025, the theme of our Expo is "In Memoriam," celebrating the life and works of artisans who have passed on, yet whose impact on the craft and those around them is utterly undeniable.
Based in Gueydan, Louisiana, Jason Mouton fashions immaculately manicured designs that are at once dynamic and elegantly refined. His style spans the spectrum, from compact and muscular to fluid and highly organic. It's the latter he expresses with his 2025 Expo offering: an homage to the legendary Japanese carver Hiroyuki Tokutomi
Tokutomi was known for his unique use of asymmetry and plateau, incorporating those stylistic elements into his pipes in a manner that was bold and striking. Mouton lovingly captures those distinctive attributes with this recreation of one of Tokutomi's signature shapes — the Mushroom.
Like Tokutomi's original, Mouton has fashioned the bowl with a noticeable structure: Sharp ridgelines frame the head's bulbous rim and fore, as do rigid, geometric panels, elegantly layered around the heel and fore wall. These architectural elements lend a crisp angularity to the form, without disrupting an organic curvature that sees the entirety of the bowl, from heel to rim, like a cresting wave, sweeping rearward toward the shank.
The bowl's posture naturally draws the eye toward the aft, where a trim shank quickly expands into a long ferrule of horn. The shank and ferrule, like the bowl, possess a paneled build, echoing the rigidity of the fore. Only rugged, asymmetrical divots of plateau disrupt this composition's chaotic order, introducing an organic asymmetry that's distinctly Tokutomi.
Mouton has dressed this piece with a beautiful dual finish, mirroring the tension of the form's fluid and structured shaping. A dark, smoky, smooth finish dresses the rim, fore wall and underside of the stummel, while a dark sandblast textures the flanks and top of the shank.
An elegant, nuanced design, this Mushroom captures Tokutomi's spirit quite beautifully, demonstrating Mouton's deep understanding of masterful pipe design.
