About This Pipe
Jody Davis is an award-winning musician and renowned pipe maker. Davis' portfolio exhibits both American and Danish influences, with plenty of compact yet muscular designs that showcase refined, practical shaping. While he pulls from several different schools of design, Davis has cultivated a style that's uniquely his own and beloved by many, and when looking at this Acorn, it's easy to see why his work is so revered.
From the inflated rim to the softly-pointed heel, the bowl of this Acorn is replete with gentle curves. Behind the bowl, a hearty, high-kicking shank emerges from the transition, with a small spur on the underside. Together, the shank and stem base mirror the shaping of the bowl, flaring out broadly with inflated curves as they rise into the air. The stem base is adorned with a spalted platan, and the bit beyond it is deeply bent, allowing this offering to be easily clenched in the jaw. The stummel wears a crisp sandblast, achieved through a unique, multi-stage technique that accentuates the briar's growth rings in high relief without overpowering the patterns of underlying grain. This finish offers rich, complex texture, and its vibrant auburn hue adds an air of vivacity to the piece.
