About This Pipe
Not just renowned for his pipe making but also for his music, Jody Davis takes influence from the American and Danish schools when crafting his artisan pipes. He took the importance of using the best materials possible from the Danish school and Jess Chonowitsch in particular, and later traveled to Vermont to learn from famed American artisan J.T. Cooke.
This Acorn from Jody's workshop has a light, natural hue to the bowl and a dark stain on the shank, providing a great contrast that gives the entire piece a sense of mystique. The sandblast boldly brings out the growth rings on the bowl and the shank alike, plus some thick birdseye on the inflated rim of the bowl that can be easily appreciated thanks to the light coloring. The heel comes to a round point before curving upward into the bottom of the shank, a separation that is helped by the contrast between light and dark on the stummel. The shank arcs upward into an accent ring of black-and-white ebony, which is minutely separated from the shoulders of the saddle-style vulcanite stem. Jody's shaping of this piece makes it a particularly eye-catching work, but his choice to go with a two-toned color scheme makes it even more intriguing.
