About This Pipe
Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2025, the theme of our Expo is "In Memoriam," celebrating the life and works of artisans who have passed on, yet whose impact on the craft and those around them is utterly undeniable.
Sabina Santos is an artisan pipe maker based in Portugal, known for her balance of aesthetics and precise engineering. Deeply influenced by the Danish school of design, she has studied under several of its modern masters, drawing from their tradition while developing a style of her own. Sabina's natural talent, paired with an infectious enthusiasm for design, makes her work a standout presence in the contemporary pipe-making community. For the 2025 Expo, Sabina has chosen to honor Sven Knudsen — an undeniably influential figure in Danish pipe making — with this Square, a modern tribute to one of Knudsen's original designs.
Knudsen's influence extended far beyond Denmark, resonating with makers across the globe — particularly in Japan. He was known for producing works that walked the line between sculptural and fluid, resulting in architectural forms that still felt organic in hand. The Square is on the more structural side of Knudsen's portfolio, emphasizing symmetry and a deep understanding of the craft. In this tribute, Sabina captures that spirit with remarkable precision.
The bowl is defined by four crisp, symmetrical facets that taper into a forward-leaning curve, carried gracefully through the pipe's languid bend. Achieving this kind of symmetry through a forward bend is no small feat; every panel remains balanced and consistent throughout the pipe's contour. The stummel is finished in a natural-stained sandblast, revealing fine tendrils of grain along the bowl's flanks and a rim bordered by clusters of birdseye, further elevating the tactile appeal of this piece.
This pipe is also a showcase of new-school design, marked by its contemporary palette and its use of Durat — a composite polyester material that incorporates 30% recycled plastic, and which Santos has pioneered in pipe making. With its vibrant patterning and environmental focus, Durat speaks to Sabina's commitment to sustainability and knack for eye-catching aesthetics. The material choice, like the shaping itself, reflects the maker behind it: thoughtful, forward-thinking, and deeply respectful of the craft's past and future. Altogether, this Square is a beautiful reflection of both its inspiration and its maker.
