G. L. Pease - Windjammer 2oz
This is what I think of when hear Navy Flake
9/10 I've smoked this tin half way down. In some pipes it sings and others it doesn't. It has never bit me. A constant pain of mine when I smoke most navy flakes that have rum. It does have a gentle to moderate rum smell and taste. It tastes a little fake but probably not. It's not overwhelming but it's there half way down. All the other components do their part and marry very well into a single not layered flavor to me. I give it a 9 because I'm too scared to give it a 10 and I find something better. The search continues but I'm calling windjammer my everyday navy flake winner, for now.
Peter Stokkebye - PS400 Luxury Navy Flake
Fantastic bulk tobacco
8/10 As far as a navy flake or a va/per PS400 is weak. The rum flavor isn't present. The perique breaks through in fits and starts. For what PS 400 actually is, it is the best in it's class. It should be advertised as a bright Virginia blend that is perfectly balanced with perique and extra sweetness added probably through a casing. PS 400 doesn't have the rum flavor that most tobacco smokers expect when you hear navy blend. Let's be honest, the categories for pipe tobacco are guidelines more than anything. It's a bright Virginia blend with a small amount of perique that helps balance the sweet hay taste of the Virginia. There is lots of bread, yeast, fresh grass and hay. The perique adds some stone fruit notes, but very little. The perique layers into the Virginia flavors and never really stands out. Can bite if you let it, and it's consistent to the end of the bowl. This is a wonderful bulk blend of you like bright Virginia. It's a classic and everyone should at least try it.
