In one of his famous songs, Johnny Cash explained how to acquire a Cadillac on the cheap: mixing and matching one purloined part at a time from the assembly line. The results may have been a bit funny-looking, but every piece was quality. In a similar spirit (minus the purloining bit), Grand Croupier's Double Down is assembled from all-sorts of quality Virginia/Burley blends; the price is low, the proportions are a spin of the wheel, but the components are quality, coming as they do from an artisanal blending house.

It's warm, nutty, even a little sweet. It's just really good burley leaning more toward a quality Danish burley flake.
A pleasant smoke. The sweet cream aroma is leading the room note.

Double down and I won. The only pity is that the bet is too small. I still have to wait for the next time to continue increasing the bet. After getting it, I once thought that the tobacco was too dry, the cutting was too random, and there was a lot of crumbs. But after randomly grabbing a handful of tobacco and filling it into my pipe, I got a sweet and sour delicacy and a rich smoke of roasted grains and nuts. Great for this price. Nothing outstanding, but all you need to have from VA+Burley blend is there: sweetness of VA and woody-earthy Burley complimenting each other harmoniously.

It has a very soft taste in the front, gradually mellow in the middle, and a little complex at the end, which is the reason why I can't give it full marks. I was lucky enough to receive a 16oz vintage tobacco. When I opened the bag, it had a very attractive fermented aroma, the grass was slightly dry, but it did not affect its flavor. A Mainstay in My Tobacco Cellar!

I probably purchase more of this blend than any other on the Smoking Pipes' website. Similar to Low Country's Virginia and Burley, but smoother and a tad lighter on the Vitamin N. I've smoked pounds of this stuff over the years, and it's always consistently top notch. In short, this is the best VaBur value on the market. Of course it's great smoked straight, but I love mixing equal parts this, Boneyard, and any preferred aromatic for a truly world class smoke!

Update 11/7/21 - I suppose the popularity of this blend has resulted in the unannounced price hike. It now cost the same as Low Country's Virginia/Burley blend, and with that blend you know EXACTLY what you're getting. I'll probably be ordering it instead from here on out. Shame. 🤷
