Nice Burley
March 22, 2018
Product: Cornell & Diehl Redburn 2oz
It's a nice mild nutty burley with a touch of sweet hay from the Virginia and an aromatic note of black strap rum.
Sea bears delight

Product: Cornell & Diehl Redburn 2oz
This is a wonderful smoke..! It emits this "Ol' time sea bears feeling" with its delicate, bold and balance taste. Burley all the way, refined with a smidgen of dark fired's woodsy smoke in the back. Virginias just add a hint of sweetness t... Read More
o outbalance and underscore the blends merits. The rum-molasses topping is very mild, but has an unique rummy-spicy and caramel-y aroma that's not unlike Black Frigates rum-note, yet not exactly the same. Burley lovers won't find this too strong and I'd rate this a solid medium. The taste on the other hand is full-bodied ,rich and bold and simply delicious!
In interplay with the lovely, blood-red tin art with its well done scetch of an sailer this is a rounded experience from adoring the tin to smoking the well-crafted crumble cake and enjoying the oustandingly good taste. Yup... love it! Read Less
Do you love smoking slowly?
July 25, 2020
Product: Cornell & Diehl Redburn 2oz
Like, super slowly? Like, barely smoking at all, even? If you enjoy taking a very long time on a bowl, and, if you have a couple of hours to sit and softly hit on it, then this is for you. Because, if you do take forever on it, then it is delicious. ... Read More
I rarely smoke slowly. I hit burley at a very rigorous pace, like, a MATCHES860 pace... And, if you do that with this tobacco, if you take it quickly, it turns hot and acrid and bitter. Yet, taken at a literal snail's pace... Damn, it is good. Read Less

On my first taste, I was hit with the fired Kentucky and Burley. Then the sweetness kicked in. Halfway into the bowl, the sweetness took hold. The Burley and Kentucky gave this a great balance. As I smoked below halfway, the caramel, molasses and rum... Read More

Delicious blend. Surprisingly, it burns very clean and did not leave my pipe a gummy mess. I was expecting a bitter end of the bowl as the sugars burned off, but the pleasant, spicy sweetness remained.
I tasted no bitterness, however the fired Kentucky and Burley has a nutty bite that gives a great balance to the smoke.
Bold aromatic.

Burley Crumble Cake

Fair At First, Solid At The Finish

Product: Cornell & Diehl Redburn 2oz
When I spotted this blend on Smokingpipes, it had me at hello, namely because I’d purchase anything named after a Melville novel or novella (see the English tobacco blend Billy Budd). Especially if it is blended by Cornell and Diehl.

or two of this crumble cake seemed fair, mediocre. Perhaps because I’d just finished a tin of Oak Alley, which I really enjoyed. I’m partial to strong blends and OA seemed more robust. But after several bowls of Redburn, I came to appreciate this happy marriage of Mr. White-And-Dark Burley and Mrs. Red and Bright Virginia. Mr. Burley wears the pants in this union, if you catch my drift. And rum punch is served at the wedding. Dark fired Kentucky barbecue and molasses cookies for the feast!
I had this same reversal of opinion, after all, with my first several bowls of Escudo Navy Deluxe—a classic for good reason. Not all blends will charm me at our first meeting. Judgment is best after several bowls anyway, especially after airing out the tobacco in question, which helped with this one.
Redburn is not exactly mild in strength (it is indeed robust) or underwhelming, in terms of quality. On the retrohale, I tasted coffee. A plus for me, as I’m a coffee fanatic. I’d restock this.
Once again, nice shot, Cornell and Diehl! 4.1 Read Less

Product: Cornell & Diehl Redburn 2oz
I was really looking forward to this blend. Unfortunately I don't get along well with the topping. Too much of a bitter chemical taste. Overwhelming. It was too spicey on the tongue and not enough smokey flavor. I didn't like this blend.

Beautiful Burley Cake

A Warming Blend
January 23, 2020
Product: Cornell & Diehl Redburn 2oz
Presentation: A eye pleasing crumble cake with mostly medium brown ribbon, and a few golds and darker portions speckled throughout compressed into a semi dense block. The same form factor as Black Frigate, Blockade Runner, etc. Tears apart easily and... Read More
it fluffs out into a generous amount of tobacco. Grab less than you think you need.
Palate: Tin aroma is burley throughout with hints of the bright and red Virginia. The topping provides a brown sugar note and the rum is applied moderately. The main portion of burleys provides a nice semi sweet chocolate and molasses flavor that is also a bit nutty and dry. The Virginias are a nice addition to the natural flavors of burley and provide a nice earthy glaze on top. The dark fired is represented well in this cake, adding just a touch of spice when you need it and not overdone. The perfect amount to keep your taste buds interested.
Performance: Burns quite fast due to the nature of the cake. Essentially it's fine ribbons compressed, and it rubs out into smaller ribbons. You can either prepare this in small chunks slightly broken or fully turn it into it's each individual components. Either way, it burns with no effort applied to the draw. However, if you do decide to rub it out fully, be sure to leave a few thicker chunks at the bottom, as the smaller pieces can interrupt your airflow by being lodged in the shank. Medium nicotine hit. Not an all day smoke but certainly able to repeat it.
Conclusion: I'm a sucker for plugs, cakes and flakes and it's no doubt that I wanted this. This is like the Captain Morgan of tobaccos. It's a little sweet with the molasses and rum topping and a little spicy with the addition of dark fired burley. I prefer smoking this in the late autumn and early winter as it has a warming quality to it, just like a nice adult spirit. Opening a fresh tin the burleys are quite dry in taste and it's hard to detect the Virginias. I've had the remaining portion of this cake jarred for a year and it has turned into a pretty great blend. The rum has tapered off and the sweet chocolate flavors of the burleys have intensified. The dark fired burley hasn't changed that much but the Virginias have given the blend a nice toasty bread note as well. I'm not sure if I will buy this blend again even though I quite enjoyed it. Another tin might possibly end up in my cellar, but not anytime soon Read Less
Blackstrap Molasses and Rummy Sweet
January 22, 2020
Product: Cornell & Diehl Redburn 8oz
I've smoked HUNDREDS of mixtures over the past 27 years and only reviewed a small fraction of them.

I forgo the lat, the sweet and high-nic mixtures I prefer make it to the top of my rotation, and Redburn is right there. As a former cigarette smoker, and for those out there that know the difference in nicotine, pipe tobacco offers a pure nicotine which isn't addictive and effects you in a very, very different way than what's found in cigarettes. Redburn is blackstrap molasses and rummy sweet. The Dark rum provides a nuance of varied spices and the molasses is dark and sweet. The burley is nutty, earthy, smooth, and increases the body of the mixture; Dark Fired provides oak and black pepper; Virginia lends a bready pastry like flavor with just a touch of earthy sweet hay. This is a good sweet and sating burley cake best smoked on a full stomach after a meal. You can detect the rum in this as similar to Black Frigate. Although the taste of Redburn is very similar to Pegasus, it's sweeter. One of the better one’s I’ve had and plan to keep some around for a while. Good Autumnal profile and excellent after meals. Medium body and flavor, though the nicotine is 4.5 out of 5... you’ve been warned. Read Less

Aged Five Years

Got a tin with five years of age for Christmas. Breaking in a 1960, minty Dunhill, shape 48 shell. It's deeelicious. The Virginia's sweeten it up a tad too. Tiny hint of rum comes through as well. Great late afternoon smoke. Enjoy yourselves.

If you are like me and want the nicotine then this is it. Is it strong nic hit... no. However, it is very relieving. The red virginias really come to light in this blend by adding a sweet spice. You can't go wrong with this blend.

This is an ok blend. It took a few months in a small jar to come into its own, as do a few of the C&D blends. The rum is applied with a heavy hand for sure, and the tin speaks of a molasses topping along with the Dark rum. My question is, wouldn’... Read More
t that be basically the same flavor? Dark rum pretty much gets its flavor from molasses. Unless they are using a well aged sipping rum which would have barrel characteristics. It could have used some licorice maybe, but that might have been too Edgeworth like, or at least the Murray’s and Orlik produced version which added Virginia and Dark Fired for some reason? Why would you mess with one of the greatest American blends of all time. Anyway, I digress haha. Redburn is nice in a Summer evening, especially if you bought it the winter before. Read Less

I agree with most of the reviewers, it has a touch of sweetness and med-full body. After a few bowls the sweetness was barely noticeable, and it's mostly burley. I smoked a few tins, and the bulk option is nice!
