This is my all time favorite pipe tobacco. To me this blend is perfect. I love everything about it. I have only tried about 20 other blends but among everything I have smoked nothing has yet to come close to Billy Budd. This is a blend that is good when you first try it, great when you really sit with it, and only grows better with time. This is my happy place pipe tobacco that I smoke on my porch. I am a huge fan....Read More

I just popped a tin of this I’d let age for 5 years, and whoa! It’s got so much going on, and by mid bowl you’re just along for the ride. For such a strong and forward tobacco, there is a pleasant subtle sweetness that creeps in. It’s reminiscent of a smoldering campfire and roasted nuts. No tongue bite or gurgle whatsoever and smooth as silk until the last wisp of smoke. Maybe the time in the can mellowed out the sharp edges. Either way, I’m glad I let it age a while....Read More

I have mostly gone back to cigars and have not smoked my pipes in the warm months. But in winter, I love this blend because it is similar to smoking a cigar. This is the coolest smoking pipe blend I have found. And, this, it one of the only pipe blends I can smoke any more.
So much more than just an English blend.

From the Latakia smell from opening the tin that sets the mouth watering, to the strong flavors, I can’t get enough of this stuff! To the Lat add a strong burley presence, giving you flavors of earth, leather, nuts, and BBQ. You could almost convince me this has a little Dark Fired in it, but no. Then if you love cigars, you’ll love the ever present and generous amount of cigar leaf, giving you dark spices and black pepper. No throwing in a sprinkle of cigar leaf just to say it includes it. You WILL taste it throughout the bowl. I’m not a huge ribbon fan, but as usual, it’s easily packed, and lights and burns easily and consistently all the way to the bottom of the bowl. But the strength, while delicious, means Billy is not an all-day smoke, nor is he recommended for new smokers or the nicotine-sensitive....Read More

The C&D Bulk Library Project Billy Budd Smoking pipes rated 4.3 This rather tasty English ribbon is comprised of Virginia, Latakia, Burley, and a touch of cigar leaf. Of course, this gives some nice deep aroma’s that include smoke, leather, spices and is a nice blend of very dry and fragrant dark ribbons. I really love the outfront smoke element of this blend. It doesn’t make any apologies for what it is - a strong blend with a strong flavor. It’s very evocative of a campfire specifically reminds me of how a campfire smells in the winter time when the air is crisp. Latakia and cigar leaf and Burley rohether all make for just a forest fire in the bowl. The layers of smoke are mesmerizing because sometimes you can pick out elements and other times they blend into a thick melange of just smoky pudding. The really funny thing is the smoke itself physically is fairly light and the mouth feel is fairly light, but the flavor is just such a heavyweight. It reminds me of some old Drew Estate cigars I used to smoke called Nica Rustica and KFC’s. This is a really nice blend. I like it a lot and I plan to order a pound. My rating: 5 This is the 75th of 101 blends. I am reviewing for this project. Which means we are 3/4 of the way there and the finish line is in sight. I’ve enjoyed this process so far and look forward to the next 26 blends....Read More
