For Pease's Jackknife Plug, dark-fired Kentucky Leaf and ripe red Virginia tobaccos, with their deep, earthy flavors, are layered on a central core of golden flue-cured for a hint of bright sweetness, then pressed and matured in cakes, and finally cut into 2oz blocks. Slice it thick and rub it out for a ribbon cut, thin for a shag, or chop it into cubes. The choice is yours.
Easily one of Pease's best recipes, this blend of fantastic DFK & Red VA flavors fills my senses to the brim with notes of robust savory tobaccos. The tin note is admittedly a bit strange; it smells exactly like barbecued meat, but as soon as it's sl... Read Moreiced and dried the smell goes away and out comes the tobacco. This casing seems to only bring-out the richness of flavor in the component tobaccos—enhancing their flavors, not dampening them. Nicotine-wise, JackKnife has a noticeable kick; medium-high at about a 7 or 8 out of 10. Recently I've had this every day after dinner, and it always leaves me with a delightful feeling of a warm & sleepy relaxation. The initial flavor during the char-light is very strong (almost cigar-like) and that might be a turn-off, but it goes away very quickly—as soon as the ember takes—and the result is a flavor I've fallen in love with. The retro-hale is blissful! I'm very scrutinizing in my reviews, so 4½ stars from me is a rating of complete and utter praise. Therefore, Jackknife is absolutely worth a try if you like 'em stout & savory over mild & sweet. Read Less

The tin note is very rich and enticing. I am in agreement with Dr Brandon's assessment that the scent is quite BBQ like. Upon smoking, you will be rewarded with a sweet, flavorful taste where the DFKs and VA compliment each other perfectly. The room note is pleasant. I just received a fresh tinful of Jacknife Plug. Out of the tin comes a thick, dense block of tobacco that has a strong burley scent. A gentle rub and a few moment later, my lighter toastes the tobacco and a charming, burley and virginia flavour washes over my tongue. It’s a strong flavour that compliments my coffee. It’s burning cool, strong and steady, providing a tickle to the back of my throat which tells me I won’t be wanting for nicotine in this blend. It isn’t as potent a flavour as Gaslight, but like Gaslight, this is a bowl to enjoy slow, for I suspect it could carry quite the bite if one were to smoke too quickly. There is a very slight nuance to this overwhelmingly burley flavour that keeps me guessing. There is also a subtle sweetness that distinguishes itself. The flavour doesn’t vary much as my bowl progresses, which I find remarkable, though I do think that the strength of the burley flavour does mellow a little toward the halfway mark. Overall, this is a strong and steady blend that is not complex, but of exceptional quality. With my last puffs, I knock the fine grey ash and look forward to the next day that starts with a bowl of this. Read Less

A very earthy, oriental-like blend that, despite its richness, does not come off as overpowering or heady. And if you're craving something akin to Balkan Sobranie, try adding a generous measure of Virginia and a pinch of Latakia. Truly wondrous!
Quality tobacco! This is my first time with plug tobacco. I bought a tin of this in 2012 from a local B&M but didn't get around to opening it until last Fall. Very slow burn but no bite although there was some harshness when smoked fast. I set it aside to try again and earlier this month I decided to slice the whole plug and rub everything out before putting back into the tin. It took me a couple of hours of slicing and I used scissors to cut pieces thinner as needed. Then I put it back in the tin a waited a few weeks before smoking. Bought 8 oz. on the hunch I'd like it. My hunch was correct. I shave off slices with a butcher knife, break some, cube some, and rub out some. Jumbled all together it's a texture kind of like Ratray's 40. A long, slow, really good evening smoke.
