I recommend Asmara. Quite good tobacco.
Oriental Blend with a Balkan Flair
February 23, 2025
Product: HU Asmara 100g
Judging from the tobacco proportions on the label I drew a quick conclusion that this blend was done in the Scottish style: mature Virginias on top supported by Orientals in the second position with Perique and Latakia mere condiments. Well, so much for quick conclusions--Asmara is not blended in the traditional Scottish style. It's much closer to a Balkan in flavor and character.

The Orientals have more than sufficient character to display a prominent spicy Balkan taste and personality along with a pretty fair amount of herbal fragrance. The Virginias are rich, a little sweet, and just below the Oriental element in dominance. (Though, it's close to an even balance.) I don't detect much from the Perique, but I do get just a little wood smoke from the Latakia. Asmara is not quite great and wonderful, but it is nevertheless quite good and very worthwhile.

It's a happy 4 out of 10 for strength and 6 out of 10 for flavor and taste intensity

Product: HU Asmara 100g
HU tobaccos have been great so far. Asmara has a delicate profile if sipped slowly...... Push too hard and it does have a bad side. Hot, stinging, low flavor burn is what you get with the bad side. To be fair, the blend can be made to behave with very slow sips with letting the burn stop occasionally. With a small amount of effort this blend can be made to perform better and give up the true flavor profile. I recommend Asmara to most Enthusiast and a few Newcomers as the blend does need some skill to get the best out of it. Update: I lowered the score from 3.5 to 3.0 due to the difficulty preventing a bad burn. Flavor is good but hard to maintain. I dried a full bowl over night and still had to take extra steps to get a good burn. Very finicky blend! For those experienced Enthusiasts who seek orientals there are good reasons to try this blend. For Newcomers who have less experience there is a good chance of a bad burn. Final Update,... I am sorry such an unsuitable cut was used for this blend. When correctly packed and with a slow pace burn, I rate this at the top of the Oriental profiles. Many delicate flavors packed into a hot burning package. With skill, you can experience the full flavor profile and it can be well worth the effort....Read More
