About This Pipe Tobacco

This fine tobacco originally had no name. It was blended before the first World War especially for the Very Reverend Dr. John White, sometime minister of the Barony Kirk in Glasgow and Moderator of the General Assembly in Scotland in 1929. He introduced it to Stanley Baldwin, later Earl Baldwin, Prime Minister in 1923, 1924, and 1935. He liked it so much that regular supplies were sent down to him and it was he who suggested that it be called "Presbyterian Mixture." A a pipe tobacco Presbyterian mixture is an English blend with a light application of Latakia combined with Orientals and Virginias.

I think to enjoy this good English blend very well, you need to become a seasoned pipe smoker. It’s a manly smoke, there is no nonsense is going on here with this blend , it’s a real good English blend. It’s not a morning blend for sure , it has some spicy in it , I don’t call it all day smoke for sure . I never tried the original tinned version before STG, so I am just smoking and reviewing the tobacco I have in front of me. And it’s good, it is damned good. The orientals are in the lead, with good virginias as a complement. It has the perfect amount of latakia—it’s just there to emphasize the orientals and add a little body to the smoke, no more. Presbyterian is tied with EMP as my desert island blend - I would be perfectly happy with either - but there are some subtle differences. Presbyterian delivers a slightly richer more leather / bread smoke than EMP. The orientals are right up front with just a hint of smoky latakia periodically peeking through as you go through a bowl. EMP is a bit brighter and more oriental forward with less richness. Either blend is excellent.Can't go wrong with Presbyterian. Absolutely excellent with creamy coffee or a cappuccino.
