Very creamy smoke, wonderful tanginess. I am not experienced enough to pinpoint out all of the tobaccos used, I ween that orange zest like taste is coming from the Virginias. It has an almost butter like taste which I have found in some cigars, and I absolutely love that!
An Excellent English Blend!

Robert Lewis Tree Mixture Blend notes: “This blend is based on a larger amount of the Orient, which is known for its delicious soft and yet aromatic and spicy flavors. A little smoky latakia and a pinch of black cavendish and Virginia perfecting the medium-strong blend harmoniously. Originally this was a "private blend" supplied to a frequent customer - Colonel Tree. Robert Lewis, founded in 1787, is the longest established tobacco merchant in London and one of the oldest in the world. Christopher Lewis, a Welshman, originally started his retail tobacconist business at 14 Long Acre in Covent Garden. Robert Lewis, a relative of Christopher Lewis, later became the administrator of the firm. As the buiness flourished, the firm moved several times and finally located at 19 St. James's Street, where it is trading today. In 1997, Robert Lewis received a Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.” Ingredients: Black Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, Virginia. The tin note is very inviting! Some Lat and a fascinating sweetness. Tree Mixture is clearly an English but the Latakia is not overpowering; it gives way to allow the Orientals to shine. These give up a spicy, really yummy taste profile. The Black Cavendish joins with mild sweetesss. The slightly tangy, slightly citrus background Virginia adds flavor as well. I’d suggest this is a OrBCavLatVa type of English. There are so many great English such that a blend really has to stand out to get attention. Tree Mixture has done that with me. The Latakia is well proportioned with the terrific Orientals. Some folk notice a similarity to Squadron Leader. My review of SQ said, in part, ‘Squadron Leader is, on my palate, a light English blend. There is a delightful sweetness from the Virginia. A bit of spice lingers in the background from the Orientals. And there is a balanced, not over-powered creamy, mildly smoky presence of the Latakia. A combination of mildly sweet char and tasty dark fruit Virginia.’ Tree Mixture puts the spice from the Orientals on the same level as the sweetness from the Back Cavendish and recedes the Latakia and the Virginia. Any Latakia will make it’s initial presence known, but here in Tree Mixture the Lat is pushed back. Both Tree Mixture and Squadron Leader are somewhere between mild and medium; not as strong as the medium (taste) strength Maltese Falcon or Wilke #400 or Peretti Omega or McConnel Original Oriental or Bengal Slices White. Tree Mixture is excellent. If you want to try an English that few people know about (despite their longevity in the field of pipe tobacco) and you lean toward English that is past mild but not quite medium, then this might be good for you to try, 4 out of 4 stars....Read More

Colonel Tree, to my knowledge, didn't do anything worthwhile in terms of establishing a military legacy. But damn did the officer have splendid taste!
Quite Nice

Tin note of sour, smoky and sugar. Tobacco is a ribbon cut of yellow, tan dark brown and black. Moisture content is great. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of smoky incense, floral, toast, sweet grass, herbal peaty vegetation, wood, sugar, tangy dark fruit, fermented sour, spice, orange peel, savory, slight bitter, acidic, a zesty tart citrus background note, and a peppery retro. Latakia is leading with Oriental/Turkish, Virginia and Cavendish supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More
#1 Best English Ever Made. Period.

The tin note has some very apparent spice, leather, butter and earthy notes. It's interesting. If you sip it, it's as smooth as silk and does burn to a white ash, like many of the white whales both extinct and rarely seen.

Very hard to compare to similar blends. Fellas, I think this is truly
in a league of its own. This is my first time smoking a foreign English blend. Luckily I stock piled enough Frog Morton: "On The Town," to last me about 12 years. I'm currently down to my last unopened can. Ergo, I decided to give this a try, as I'm running on fumes. I'm not as experienced as some of you, I've only been smoking pipes since 2011, so... not a lot of experience compared to the majority of the connoisseurs on here.

The first tin of English I ever tired, was Frog Morton, On The Town and I stuck with it without really giving anything else the old college try. I suppose, it kind of spoiled me for anything else. Not to support the; "me too," pipe tobacco movement, but I found the Esoterica blends to be exceptional as well. John Cotton, is another I enjoy. Unfortunately and shamefully, I have ordered from other companies, but I've found Smoking Pipes/ Smoking Pipes Europe to be the best resource to find pipes and tobaccos.

Honestly, SP's customer support and staff is 1st class and every other major corporation can take a few pages out of their play book. (Yes I'm talking about you COJ's) For those of you who are unaware of SP's European Sister Company. Definitely check them out if your looking for the good stuff. I've noticed a lot of reviews from fellow "Smoking Pipes," colleagues, that a lot of you tend to poorly rate the tobacco only due to the fact they sell out before you can order any?

Or because the brand has "Tongue Bite." First, and by no means do I intend to insult anyone, but, the Bite people are referring to has about 20% to do with the quality of the tobacco, 10% the quality of the pipe and about 70% of the moisture level and rate in which you're burning through a bowl. There are so many good blends that get poor reviews on here that its nauseating. If your really that sensitive to bite, just go the European route and get every pipe in a 9mm filter which, I hate to say it, because it's like adding water to Pappy 15 year, but the 9mm filters actually do an amazing job of removing bite for those of you faster sippers, like me. I'm 100% behind the 9mm filter systems and I rarely buy anything but 9mm pipes anymore. They can bulldose through the Sh*tiest with ease. (Name dropping mainly Captain Black and those like it).

Back to my second point; before (you) and you know who you are, keep poorly rating some of these outstanding products, may I suggest; educating yourselves about the mixture, moisture content, cellaring, aging of the various blends and most importantly, for you hipsters our there, actually smoking the blends before writing a review.

I completely understand the frustration of not getting your chance to snag a few tins of the white whales, however, part of the fun of visiting this site daily, not only to check the notifications of what's coming but also the fresh pipes and reviews from the blogs and the incredibly descriptive Shane Ireland.

I digress, for those of you who like English blends, this is exceptional, it's truly unlike anything else out there. I'm a huge fan, I'll be buying as much of this as I can to save and cellar. As I believe this is going to be the next white whale of the tobacco world for English blends. It's an extremely high quality product, there's very little if any chunks, sticks or "Rubbish," to sift through. It's one of those, amazing English blends right out of the tin, that is fairly rare to find these days.

I give it a resounding 5 star review and recommend it to anyone who appreciates a ultra high quality English. Don't expect this one to stick around. It's up there with the best, if not the best.
