About This Pipe
Sergey Ailarov is one of Russia's foremost pipe-making artisans, and he draws inspiration from a wide range of styles, including the Japanese, Danish, and American schools of design. Ailarov's various influences culminate in a style that's entirely his own, and well-displayed here with this attractive Blowfish.
The linework on this piece is something to behold, with filleted flourishes adding even more dynamism to the already highly dynamic silhouette. In particular, the splitting and converging ridgelines along the shank face and the bowl's aft add extra visual intrigue and just a touch of rigidity to the otherwise fluid form. Moreover, the dynamic curve of the stem's base mirrors that of the shank face, making for a pleasing repetition of line. This combination of curves mirrors the curve of the bowl's aft wall, creating a rippling effect, with each arcing line growing broader as the eye moves through composition.
In terms of finish, the briar's natural hue and a glossy sheen allow the stummel's grain and shaping — and the impressive confluence between the two — to speak for themselves. Beautiful birdseye adorns the flanks of the stummel, while impeccable cross grain wraps around the top and underside for an array of grain as varied as the stummel's shaping. All in all, this is a thoughtfully designed piece that's even more rewarding to the viewer in person (and even more so when smoked.)
