About This Pipe
Jeff Gracik of J. Alan crafts some of the finest pipes in the world, bar none. He's one of pipe-making's most accomplished artisans, and his work is widely celebrated, not just for its aesthetic beauty, which is ample, but also for its superior engineering. There are no better representations of Gracick's superior craftsmanship than this Calabash — a design so indicative of Gracik's talents that it received his coveted and rarely seen "Wave" grade.
Historically, the Calabash shape — defined by its curved and flowing stummel, hollow interior, and chamber cap — was fashioned from gourd and fitted with a meerschaum cap. This particular Gracik Calabash features a briar stummel and a removable cap of cocobolo, the hardwood surrounding an interior chamber of briar that can be seen peeking out of the rim's apex. The cocobolo's dark complexion mirrors that of the stem, both mouthpiece and rim cap bookending the sweeping gesture of the stummel.
The stummel tapers elegantly from rim to shank end, gradually diminishing as it approaches the aft, with the shank, in particular, taking on a trim, ovoid shape as it lifts into the saddle stem. The entire length of the stummel possesses a breathtaking showing of grain — cross grain rushes across the briar's flanks while birdseye blooms across the top and underside. All that brilliant grain is brought to life by a rich smooth finish, the glossy polish adding visual flair to the already dazzling composition. No just satisfied with fashioning a gorgeous pipe, Gracik has also paired this piece with a visually captivating stand of cocobolo and curly maple.
