Sandblasted Oversized Tomato Tobacco Pipe

Antonio Lancellotti's pipes reflect a thoughtful, organic approach to shaping, balancing clean lines with graceful proportions and a distinctly Italian sense of refinement. Based in Oppido Lucano in Italy's Basilicata region, Lancellotti began making pipes in 2021 after years of independent study, later refining his craft through guidance from artisans such as Davide Iafisco, Angelo Del Prete, and Cornelius Mänz. Favoring freehand designs, he allows each block of Italian briar to guide the finished form. Lancellotti's work combines careful craftsmanship with an adaptable creative process, producing refined pipes with a character all their own.

This Oversized Tomato is among the first of Lancellotti's work to appear on our site, offering an excellent introduction to his highly artisanal shaping style. While it departs from the classic Tomato archetype, the bowl retains the shape's signature squat, rounded proportions, reinterpreted through a distinctly organic lens. A strong sense of forward momentum defines the composition, with the bowl taking on an almost Scoop-like profile. The chamber is positioned near the fore of the bowl, while the gently concave rim reinforces the shape's flowing lines and dynamic posture.

The shank is equally expressive, recalling the artisan Fish shape through its asymmetrical treatment. One flank remains softly rounded, while the other is defined by a pronounced ridgeline that runs the length of the shank before culminating at a dramatically flared face. Left smooth, the shank face provides an elegant contrast to the sandblasted finish that covers the rest of the stummel. The crisp blast beautifully accentuates the briar's stacked growth rings along the bowl's flanks while imparting a rich texture throughout. Despite its impressive size, the pipe feels remarkably cohesive and fluid, its sweeping lines and carefully balanced proportions lending it a sense of grace that belies its substantial presence.
