About This Pipe

David Huber is an American artisan whose style blends innovation with reverence for tradition, and he is known for his unique, often highly organic compositions. Combining fluid curves with crisp, rigid linework, this bent Dublin is an excellent testament to Huber's pipe-making prowess.

The composition here exudes a wealth of dynamism, with most of it coming from the tilt of the bowl and the elegant asymmetry of the shank. A steady, subtle curve underscores the stummel's bottom horizon, ebbing upward at the fore to give the bowl's heel a lifted appearance that strengthens the pipe's sense of implied movement. The stummel's underscoring curve is established by a continuous, crisply rendered ridgeline that travels uninterrupted along the length of the shank and around the bowl's heel, imbuing the entire form with a continued element of fluidity while still remaining rather sharp and linear itself. Adding to this pipe's dynamic silhouette is the off-kilter cant of the rim, which is mirrored by the extended curve of the shank's right flank, making for a pleasing sense of balance, as well.

Not only does this bent Dublin exhibit a strong sense of push and pull with its shaping; it also demonstrates excellent contrast in tone and texture, too. The rim and shank face wear a smooth, lustrous finish over a vibrant sienna stain, while the rest of the stummel wears an inky, craggily textured sandblast. The flashes of smooth, lighter stained briar serve to highlight not only the medium's excellent grain, but also the distinctive shaping cues that make this bent Dublin so unique.
