About This Pipe
American artisan Jared Coles grew up around his pipe-smoking grandfather, and, fondly remembering their time together, he decided to take up the hobby himself when he turned 18. It wouldn't be until several years later, during his studies at UC Irvine, that he would discover the world of artisan pipes. Mesmerized, he decided to try his hand at crafting pipes himself, and since then he has grown to be an accomplished artisan in his own right. Coles draws on a variety of pipe-making styles from all over the world, resulting in an eclectic style that's still uniquely his own.
This Billiard, for example, showcases the refined, clean lines of the Danish carving style as well as the compact muscularity of the American style. The bowl stands quite tall in the composition, yet strikes a pleasing proportional balance with the shank, whose width and length both approximate that of the bowl. A low-set, angular transition and slender saddle stem keep things sleek in profile, while a mount of yellow and white resin adds a sunny dose of color to the composition. The rest of the stummel wears a dark, smoky sandblast, which offers plenty of tactile appeal and rugged character.
