About This Pipe
Jody Davis' distinct style — steeped heavily in Danish aesthetics — and exceptional craftsmanship have propelled him to an exalted status within the pipe-making world. The artisan's grading system consists of the following in ascending order: Friar, Abbott, Bishop, Cardinal, and Saint. Within each grade, there are also sub-grades; this A-graded Saint, for example, is among the best of the best of Davis' work.
Not only is this Tomato an excellent showcase of Davis' skill, it's also an excellent representation of the classic shape. The bowl is broad, squat, and framed by gentle, supple curves. A faint, curving ridgeline gives a subtle point to the heel of the bowl, adding a touch of rigidity to the curvaceous form while still remaining quite fluid and dynamic itself. Out back, the shank makes a gentle upturn that matches the swell of the bowl's heel, and it flares outward ever so slightly before reaching a trim mammoth accent. Never one to overlook the importance of a beautifully carved stem, Davis has paired this Tomato with a stylized saddle stem of vulcanite, which features a pair of narrow pseudo-shoulders near the bit, preceded by a broader set of shoulders with an almost mushroom-like curl on the edges. The mirrored curves of both components of the stem make for a pleasing visual rhythm, especially in conjunction with the raised band of mammoth.
The aforementioned band adds a pop of lightness to the composition, while the stummel's smooth finish and vibrant auburn stain offer plenty of clarity and definition to appreciate the briar's exceptional grain. Davis did a phenomenal job reading said grain and maximizing it to the fullest, with flame grain climbing the plump walls of the bowl on all sides, and tightly coiled birdseye speckling the rim and the top and underside of the shank. All in all, this is a beautifully made piece from Davis — one that exhibits some of his very finest shaping, finishing, and briar reading.
