About This Pipe
Skilled artisan Lan Zhenjun draws inspiration from the Danish masters, placing special emphasis on clean lines and balanced, gestural shaping. Though this Freehand from Zhenjun is highly asymmetrical, especially around the shank-and-stem arrangement, it still retains a strong sense of balance. The bowl is squat and Tomato-like, and conforms to the curves of the palm nicely. So, too, does the shank-and-stem arrangement, which is skewed heavily to the right. This placement further accentuates the form's twisting momentum, which imbues the composition with a strong sense of dynamism, offering new details to appreciate when viewed from any angle.
Twisted, off-kilter shaping aside, the shank-and-stem arrangement on this piece would be highly unique even without those extra flourishes. The shank starts out rather cinched at the transition before flaring abruptly toward the stem. The shank face is quite wide and lenticular in shaping: an excellent choice to showcase the form's general twist and tilt. An arcing, push-style stem joins the shank, decorated with a single, slender expansion ring whose diameter matches that of the brassy ring embedded within the shank face. Though the shaping of this piece is highly varied and differs from every angle, it's all unified by a dark, smoky sandblast that not only offers a stimulating texture in hand, but also lends plenty of visual definition to the briar's handsome grain.
