Peterson - De Luxe Navy Rolls 50g
The Gentleman’s Navy Roll
A benchmark Va/Per coin that balances elegance with quiet authority. De Luxe Navy Rolls opens with refined, matured Virginia sweetness—golden hay, light citrus peel, and a faint honeyed roundness—before the Perique gradually weaves in with soft plum, pepper, and a gentle fermented depth. The spice is measured, never sharp, serving more as structure than spotlight. What distinguishes DNR is its composure: it’s neither bright nor brooding, but poised, classic, and deeply traditional. The smoke is cool, steady, and contemplative, rewarding slow cadence and thoughtful attention. This is a Va/Per that doesn’t rush to impress—it earns appreciation over time. A true staple blend, excellent fresh and exceptionally well-suited for aging, where the Virginias deepen and the Perique integrates into a seamless, wine-like complexity.

G. L. Pease - Union Square 8oz
Where Fermentation Becomes the Feature - Tang
Union Square stands out for its dough. The crust has a noticeable fermented tang — clean, lactic, and sourdough-adjacent — that hits first without turning sharp or acidic. It’s a bright, savory sourness that adds depth and balance rather than overpowering the slice. The profile is reminiscent of Golden Slice, but Union Square feels just as intentional, with fermentation used to give the yogurt like character, not gimmick.

Seattle Pipe Club - Plum Pudding 2oz
Mississippi River is ten times the tobacco Plum Pudding is.
Plum Pudding is fine. It deserves its place on the shelf, and in the rotation of someone learning English blends. But compared to Mississippi River, it feels like a sketch beside a finished painting. The complexity, placement, and lingering character of Mississippi River make Plum Pudding feel muted and one-dimensional by comparison.

Seattle Pipe Club - Mississippi River 2oz
Flavor That Lives Behind the Palate
Mississippi River occupies a singular space. It is neither a traditional English nor a straightforward Va/Per, and it avoids the familiar patterns of both. Its most defining trait is a flavor expression that shows itself almost exclusively in the back of the throat, unlike any blend I’ve encountered. Stewed Fruit and tang and wine in the back of the throat. This unique placement creates an experience that feels deliberate and refined — less about general tobacco flavor and more about lingering unique experience.

Cornell & Diehl - Carolina Red Flake with Perique 2oz
Dark Fruit Depth, Creamy Smoke, and Refined Balance
It really is that good! Out of the tin, the presentation is excellent — well-cut flakes at an ideal moisture level, ready to smoke with almost no prep. The tin note leans dark and rich, offering figs, plums, and stewed fruit rather than the brighter hay or citrus common in other Virginias. The first light is subdued, but the quality is evident. As the bowl develops, the Virginias take center stage — smooth, bready, and slightly tangy — while the Perique stays supportive, lending depth and a measured spice without ever dominating. Mid-bowl, the smoke rounds out with a creamy, full texture that holds steady into the finish. Compared to other VaPers, Carolina Red Flake with Perique is less spicy than Sutliff’s Crumble Kake or Watch City’s Old Dominion, but it carries itself with more polish and refinement than either. Where those blends can lean sharp or edgy, this one favors balance, depth, and smoothness. The final third brings a touch more strength and spice but never loses composure. Overall, this is a refined Virginia/Perique — not a fireworks show, but a study in restraint and craftsmanship. It’s highly smokeable now, and I expect it will only gain complexity and elegance with a few years in the cellar.

Capstan - Flake Blue 1.75oz
A Timeless Flake with Legendary Company
Capstan Blue is the Virginia flake I measure all others against — my favorite, through and through. It opens with grassy hay and bright citrus, then deepens into bread, honeyed sweetness, and a gentle tang as the bowl develops. It’s not flashy or overly complex, but that’s its strength: smooth, balanced, reliable, and endlessly enjoyable, whether fresh or aged. Everyone says Tolkien smoked this blend, and while that’s not why I love it, I’ll admit it makes me smile to think of sitting with him, sharing in the same simple pleasure. For me, Capstan Blue isn’t just another Virginia — it’s the timeless definition of one.

G. L. Pease - Quiet Nights 2oz
From Hesitation to Habit
Quiet Nights is a contemplative English that didn’t resonate with me at first—its layered nature was disorienting—but now its very complexity draws me back. This blend balances ripe Virginias, smoky Cyprus Latakia, nuanced Orientals, and just enough Perique to intrigue without overwhelming. As JimInks noted, it’s a well-composed all-day smoke with “sweet and savory flavor from top to bottom,” while others describe its flavor evolution as “smooth, well-balanced, uniquely sweet, and full-bodied.” Give it time—jar it, revisit it—and Quiet Nights reveals itself: thoughtful, deep, and undeniably worth savoring.

Peterson - Flake 50g
A Preserved Virginia
Peterson Flake is the modern continuation of the old Dunhill Flake, carrying its lineage forward much like an heirloom apple variety passed down from orchard to orchard. Easy to prepare, it lights quickly, burns cool, and opens with grassy hay and citrus before settling into warm bread, honey, and a malty richness with a touch of tang and nuttiness by mid-bowl. Mild-to-medium in strength, it’s dependable, widely available, and a straight Virginia that ages into something truly special.

Solani - Silver Label - 660 100g
A Subtle Opening, a Spicy Heart
At the start, Silver Flake presents as mild and approachable, with the Virginias offering a soft grassy sweetness and bready undertone but not much assertiveness. About halfway through the bowl, the character changes: the Perique steps forward with its subtle fig and plum-like tang, adding just the right amount of peppery spice, while the dark-fired Kentucky grows fuller and rounder, bringing earthy depth, nutty body, and a richer spiciness. The smoke gradually evolves from gentle and unassuming to warm, complex, and satisfying, finishing with a more robust presence than it began. This developmental arc — from mild Virginia entry to Perique-spiced, Kentucky-fortified crescendo — makes Silver Flake a rewarding, contemplative smoke that repays a slow cadence and ages gracefully in the jar. Looking forward to jarring it and seeing the change after a few years.
