Captain Earle's: Diamond Head 8oz Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-463-0014

Captain James Earle first took to sea at age 12, embarking on a life-long passion that saw him ascend to the rank of Master of the Charles W. Morgan, the last of the wooden whaling ships, currently docked in Mystic, Connecticut. Manufactured by Cornell & Diehl, Captain Earle's pipe tobaccos pay tribute to his legacy, each blend in the series alluding to an important time in his life.

Like many of Captain Earle's pipe tobaccos, Diamond Head is a very full English blend, comprising Latakia, Orientals, and Virginias in a dense plug that's certain to satisfy lovers of the smoky leaf.

Good Flavors, Excellent Mechanics.

Product: Captain Earle's Diamond Head 2oz
Overall, this is a good English and is worth trying at least once. Initially opening the tin and the first light I was a little disappointed at how subtle the smell was. Based on previous reviews I was thinking I would get a lot more or a smokey smack in the face. I kept smoking though and I was not disappointed. Going down the bowl I've gotten notes of salted caramel and a savory nuttiness that gives way to a leathery, woody character if you're really picking apart the flavors. Other times I've been a little more distracted from the smoke and just had the satisfaction of smoking a good English. This is something I might consider smoking year-round and not just in the colder seasons like I usually do with English blends. Maybe my favorite aspect of this blend is the smoking mechanic. I've never had a bowl of this which didn't smoke right down to the heel in a fine grey powdery ash. (The first time I smoked this I wasn't paying attention and actually sucked ash straight through - very unpleasant but not the tobacco's fault) A few things that keep this from getting a full five stars from me are the lighter nature of the body of the smoke and there's a chemical-like acrid taste that's fairly noticeable that other people have also pointed out. I would recommend having a drink with this one too, because it leaves the mouth a little dry....Read More

A good example of a full English Crumble Cake (not plug) is full of Latakia and balanced wiith Orientals. I enjoy this blend in the afternoon or evening. The full body is just a great way to end the day.
A Great Smoke

Having favored English blends ever since I started smoking a pipe in 2000, I had never tried a Captain Earle's blend until recently. That was when I opened a tin of Diamond Head for the first time, and it was love from the first puff! With just the right amounts of Latakia and Oriental leaf, Diamond Head has become my new favorite all day smoke. A great find and a great smoke!...Read More

I posted a bad review at first, This isn't bad once you let it dry out some. The smell of fertilizer go's away once dry, smells more like a camp fire now which I kind of like, this might even be good for blending, I will try that too.

I'm picky I guess. not into the smell or the taste. More like burnt fertilizer. To each his own I guess. Just being honest.
I don't reach for it often, but its good

Tin note of sour fruit wine and smoke. Tobacco is a marbled dark brown, black and tan Krumble Kake. Moisture content is a little high, some may want to dry it a bit. Rubs out easily and burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and consistent, with notes of smoky, musty fermented sour vegetation, toast, herbal spices, wood, leather, floral, mildly spicy, zest citrus, acidic, earthy, orange peel, incense, a lemon grass background note, and a peppery retro. Latakia is leading with Oriental/Turkish supporting and Virginia supporting from the rear. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More
good blend

Product: Captain Earle's Diamond Head 2oz
I found the blend to be a good mix of flavor with a nice finish. It does become a bit intense toward the end of a bowl yet there is a good balance. The word “Balance” and “Restraint” come to mind during a bowl. Sweet and Strong work together to a finish that was a tic under medium. I liked how the blend tells a story of “Marriage” in tobacco. C&D are the experts in creating blends with themes and while I do not like them all, I recognize they hit the marks intended. Recommend to all Enthusiasts and newcomers as this blend offers a lot to all....Read More

Product: Captain Earle's Diamond Head 2oz
This is my second Captain Earle blend (First being ten russians) and it does not disappoint. While this isn't rated as a strong smoke, it affects me more than Ten Russians. If I had to compare it to another blend, I would compare it to Dan Tobacco's "Old Ironsides" but better by a longshot. Ultimately, if you like Latakia, but don't want a total Lat bomb, I'd recommed going with this blend. Age when smoked: 34 Pipe used: Good ole Meer...Read More

Excellent blend! I love the Captain Earle’s selections and this one is my favorite. It’s consistent and great from the very start to whenever you can force yourself to put it down. The best way I can describe the flavor is warm, buttery, sooty, chewey bread with a hint of sweetness. Great balance of sweet vs. savory. And it just gets better the further down the bowl you go. Full flavor but not overpowering and no bite....Read More
