I usually smoke McClelland Flake, usually Dark Navy Flake or Virginia /Perique. I tried this stuff on a whim and because of its discounted price point and reviews. I figured for $24, what the heck. Great tin aroma at first. Not quite the distinct aro... Read More
mas of McClelland's flake, but very nice aroma indeed with a a good mixture of golden Virginias and Kentucky. There is also a nice hint of licorice, which I am fond of. First pipe was easy to light and had some very distinct aromas of licorice, but not overpowering. Halfway through the bowl, the Kentucky really kicked in with a nice spicy kick to it. The tecture of the tobacco is sliced cake and each flake folds nicely into my bowl. Not too wet and not to dry. Needless to say, I bought 5 more cans of this stuff, and plan on buying another 5. Should be even better in a couple of years. Read Less

The sweetness of the Virgina and spiceyness of the dark Kentucky make this an excellent tasty blend. And the flakes are Beautiful. A satisfying blend.

I bought this blend upon a recommendation that it was more complex than Orlik DSK, however I found this has more bite, Will let it age and comeback to it later.

This blend sums up everything that is wrong with Peter Heinrich's, in my opinion. This is an unrefined, flat, overly mild blend that bites at the least provocation but that has a nice room aroma. There is a light spiciness in the smoke that promises ... Read More
something good to come but it just doesn't happen. It's not a bad smoke but it's nothing that a long time pipesmoker could call a "reference" blend.
If I hadn't had such good success with Peter Heinrich's Symphony and, to a lesser extent, I'd suggest that I just don't care for the Danish style of tobacco blending. Then again, Alfred & Christian Peterson have produced many noteworthy blends. I think. Most Peter Heinrich's will not find their way back into my cellar. Read Less

In the tin: Pretty, dark brown flakes. Pleasant slightly acrid smell of fermented Virginias.

ttedly. but harsh and lacking in the sweetness I would expect from a Virginia blend. Towards the end of the bowl, intrepid explorer that I was, the "taste" just became stronger and more noxious.
I can't recommend this to anyone. Maybe it's the flake form. I've never met a flake that I liked. I'm very much in the minority here and haven't been pipe-smoking that long. Perhaps I don't know how to rub out a flake satisfactorily yet. Read Less

n and was greeted to a very nice presentation of broken golden and black flakes, all from what looked to be broken squares. The moisture content was just right for smoking. The tin aroma on deep sniffing had a subtle sweetness and I picked up notes of caramel and licorice in the background, very subtle and only on deep inhalation. Loading and lighting were no problem. What a beautiful smoking experience this is. It has a very subtle sweetness with hints of licorice (way in the background). It imparts a very nice spicy presence to the tongue. Nothing chemical or medicinal in the taste profile. There is no bite, bitterness, moisture build up, and it doesn't smoke hot at all. Overall, very pure in tobacco taste with a subtle sweetness. The leaf quality is top notch. I would not classify this as an aromatic at all. This is better than Mac Baren's Stockton (which I happen to enjoy) and what Solani Silver Flake tries to be, but is too bland for my tastes (see my review of Silver Flake).
I am happy I have a 200gm tin. My main concern is availability, but I like it so much that I would be willing to order it directly from Peter Heinrichs in Germany - it is that good. 5 stars hands down! Read Less

lik Dark Kentucky was a slightly sweeter and easier on the tongue when I compared the two blends some years back. PH DSF seems just slightly harsher, and has a little more molasses than the licorice in the Orlik version. The red Virginia was a little more prominent in ODSK with more dark fruit flavor.
Burns cool, clean and a little slow with a very consistent sweet taste. Has a pleasantly lingering after taste. Read Less

what a miracle. It's worth that time to get at this stuff. It basically smokes itself, nice and sugary, with a distinct maple aroma. Dates, brown sugar, cider vinegar, cinnamon, a touch of mesquite smoke, fresh cherries, and so much more. This is complex, rich but not overpowering, malty and ancient-tasting (like a well-aged tea or old, old books inside a tobacco shop). It's one of the greats, and if you don't like it, let that lady sit for a while and give her some time to come to terms with herself. She's a rare breed that gets wiser and more beautiful the more she ages.
