Better than Capstan Blue

For years I tried every Virginia I could find and landed on capstan blue as a favorite. Once Mac Baren was sold, I discovered Opening Night was cheaper, just as good, and under my nose the entire time. If you like virginias at all, I suspect you’ll love this.

I still love HB Cake. It's a totally different kind of smoke. Opening Night isn't very complex. Near the end, I was getting some interesting raisin and fermented flavors just a little bit. But through most of it, it was sugared, toasted grains. Honey Graham crackers, but luscious and rich, full-bodied, with a smoky undertone. This is made from really excellent sun-sweetened leaf and has been prepared masterfully.
I recommend a corn cob pipe without filter for the wide open 6mm bore, and don't puff on it after it's lit. Just let the smoke drift up into your mouth. Slow and gentle gives sweet and rich. The palm-roll filling method works great for me with this broken flake. If you handle it correctly, this is an excellent all-day smoke. I'm going to make a habit of aging this one....Read More

VS Union Square :)

It is quite similar to Union Square but ... if Union Square is white sugar cane, Opening Night is more brown sugar. Also Opening Night is more peppery, complex and vegetal. I can not say it is better, I also rated Union square at 5 ... but I have a very slight preference for Opening Night (because at the end of the box, after smoking Union Square 2 weeks I was a bit bored to it) In conclusion, I highly recommend. This is a great, mild, sweet smoke. I get hay notes coming through the strongest. But you get some slight sweet bread notes as well. On the backend you get this hint of sweet citrus. This is a superb Virginia flake. It is mildly cased and has no toppings. I find it to be equally good to Union Square but somewhat different in character. It is earthier and more vegetal than Union Square. A month of jar time brought out the sweetness significantly and calmed the earthiness a bit. It smokes fairly dry leaving minimal moisture at the bottom of the bowl. I've found that it works best for me fully rubbed in a nice wide mouthed bowl or a conical Dublin bowl. Nicotine is on the low side of medium but in a conical bowl works its way to a solid medium about half way through the bowl. There is a small rough edge in the freshly opened flake but after a month of jar time that rough edge disappeared. Zero bite to my Virginia sensitive mouth.
