ust exist in the tin might be salvaged and headed downstairs to fully evaluate the tobacco’s condition after many years of remaining literally expose to the general conditions of my tobacco cellar.
Sitting down and removing the paper insert I was surprised to see what appeared to be a healthy leaf structure. Reaching a few fingers in and expecting to see these ribbons turn to dust I was surprised that the tobacco, while no longer clinging together with the squeeze, sprung back into shape and didn’t not crumble to dust!!!! I recalled the initial smoke of this somewhere in 2022 and being less than happy with the initial experience. I may have thought the blend too wet to be enjoyed and left the tin open and waiting for a few days form me to return to it. Not 4 years! Pouring the contents out and touching the tobacco again revealed that all parts were springy and not crumbling. With little chunks of unbroken flake to boot!!!! The tin smell had largely dissipated but holding my nose over the blend I could still detect the smoky Latakia still being lightly present. Hmmmmm, I thought, this looks perfect and while I was on the hunt for that jar of Hansam Flake, this I decided would be my morning pipe! I pulled out my Ratrray Craggy Root that I had converted from a filtered pipe to a non filtered pipe and slowly gravity filled the bowl, only stopping to tap the bowl and occasionally inset a piece of unbroken flake chunks vertically into the bowl. Having filled and settled the tobacco in the chamber, I went and prepared my cup of herbal tea. Collecting a box of 3 stars matches, I slowly migrated to the patio to enjoy what has become a rare cooler morning in Southern California. Using three matches to establish my char lighting, the smoke was Latakia forward, releasing that Smokey aspect that quickly moved to the background true light (all done via radiant heating) a slight caramel and sweet spice filled the smoke. The Virginia settled in the back with the Latakia to frame the most incredible presentation of Orientals. The smoke would fill with the sweetly spiced and the herbal sour incense of the Orientals.
Only upon relight did the Latakia move to the front, but quickly would settle back to support the sweet Virginias and the sweet Virginias would frame the center stage orientals. Spice on the tongue, the retro hale would move back and forth from Oriental florals to sweet spice.
Good Morning indeed!!! What is a rare occurrence where tobacco, pipe and refreshment all synergistically worked together in the best presentation of Orientals I have ever experienced. Fluke? Could be, but control of the ember and a gently pace was delivering a purely delightful Oriental experience. Mouth watering at times, spicty at times but never far from the center of the experience.
Hats off to a masterful blend that time and patience rewarded very generously. This is a blend that improves with age and is the best example I have at memory of what a skilled blender can do with three leafs, Latakia, Virginias and Oriental!
I will be putting more of this into my cellar, but will remember to allow the blend to air out and dry as much as possible, to give the chamber of the pipe plenty of room to allow the ember to smolder and allow those oils to migrate as gently as possible to the heel of the bowl. YMMV, but here is a great example of an initial failure to understand and allow the tobacco to dictate what it wants to fully express itself!...Read More

Excellent English morning blend

ss and dark fruit taste. Orientals do its usual dry incense thing as well as provide somewhat creamy taste and lots of spice. I would say that Virginias and Orientals are in fierce competition for leadership and during the smoke one often takes the lead over other. Smoky and soft Latakia is ever present but always takes a backstage which is exactly as it should in the English morning blend IMHO.
The blend is not pipe dependent at all. Tastes the same both in briar and meerschaum pipes of all sizes and shapes.
Altogether, it is an excellent English morning blend. I would rank it higher but I like my regular morning staple of Chelsea Morning, Ashbury, and Meridian more....Read More
