Cornell & Diehl: Good Morning 2oz Pipe Tobacco

This is easily one of my favorite C&D blends of those that I have tried. It is a wonderful light English, with the orientals in the driver seat, the Virginias riding shotgun and the Latakia barely awake in the backseat. Well blended and well balanced it does indeed serve as an excellent choice for a morning smoke with coffee or tea, but really this is an all day, any day blend for me. The ribbons are easy to pack and light. If you are a fan of EMP or Presbyterian (though this is something different, and not quite as smooth or sweet as Presbyterian, another of my favorites, and not necessarily a match blend for EMP) I think you’ll like this one. Or for folks who are into oriental/virginia mixtures but don’t love Latakia, definitely give this one a go, as that component doesn’t make a ton of noise in this blend. It also would make for a great introduction to English tobacco blends for newer pipe smokers out there who have primarily been smoking aromatics. Easy smoking, flavorful and very consistent, it’s a 5 star blend that is among my favorites from any blending house. Highly recommend. A nice mild blend to start your morning with a nice cup of tea.

Mellow blend, perfect for a morning smoke with coffee. Lighter, mild flavor with little bitterness. I agree with DK Acolyte: pack loosely and smoke slowly. I’d buy in bulk if SP carried it. Quickly becoming my “go-to” smoke.

Being a self-proclaimed fanatic of the Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe, I do not find this to be 'reminiscent' as the description claims. Having smoked Dunhill EMP (I have not had the Peterson version as I stocked up before the transition occurred) everyday for the past 4.5 years, I do not find this to be even close to a match blend. Without a doubt, my highly subjective expectation has contributed to my dislike for C&D Good Morning, however, this blend is very forward on the Virginias and lacks the support from Latakia/Oriental tobaccos. This a lovely mellow blend. My smoking technique is really important to get the most out of it. I loosely pack the pipe. This is key and fundamental to enjoy the taste profile (it asks for a fairly open draw). If I can smoke slowly, avoiding any overheating of the leaf with excessive frequent hard draws, I find a lovely consistent blend. Subtly complex, switching between Oriental and Virginia forward. The natural leaf flavors, typical of Virginia and Orientals, dominate with notes of hay, earth, nuts, wood, and mild citrus. Just a kiss of latakia smokiness sits in the background. A very mellow and mild tartness will develope occasionally throughout the bowl but is infrequent. The after taste is mature Virginia with a touch of the Oriental nutty/woodsyness. Definitely comparable to EMP in that it's Oriental forward with condimental levels of Latakia. That said, this stuff is clearly good enough to stand on its own without name dropping to establish its credibility. A hot cuppa and a bowl of Good Morning is indeed the tasty treat that can't be beat any time of day or night. This could easily be an all day, every day smoke for me. My morning smoke is a non-aro. I smoke aro's in the afternoon. I've found Good Morning to be consistent, morning after morning, tin after tin.

I normally smoke virginia or burley blends and the occasional aromatics. Never any latakia blends usually . Holy cow this good morning is an amazing blend in every way. What should be noted upfront is that this blend deserves to be reviewed without a comparison to EMP. The fruity, red Virginas and the light, citrusy, light Virginas form the base of this blend (with the reds standing out more). The Latakias are lightly added from my taste, yet playing well enough of a part to obtain the smoky/woody notes throughout the bowl. The Orientals, coming in 2nd place, deliver their tanginess and distinct sweetness themselves.Can be a somewhat a wet smoke and certainly an all day blend.
