About This Pipe Tobacco

Dark and cube cut Burley with red Virginia ribbon and Perique create a smooth, all day smoke. Another Runowski creation named in honor of the man who taught Bob to smoke a pipe: his grandfather, Old Joe Krantz.

Wonderful mouthfuls of delight await your gentle flames' impending caress. These chocolate-background, white-text-labeled mixtures have achieved a true nirvana of blending goodness. Instead of thinking of this merely as an offshoot of Haunted Bookshop (though perhaps still a relative!), it must be considered as its very own thing. There's a cleaner (less "dusty") mouthfeel and a different painting of light than what comes through the bookstore's window. Sweetness and purity are waiting for you here- even before you arrive! Included (of course) is the burley's wonderful richness and sturdy base of goodness. Reminding one sometimes of an oatmeal cream, and other times of a stout mocha, the red Virginias, playing betwixt the perfect amounts of burley and perique, provide that enchanting sweetness you'll pursue with glee, like kaleidoscope chameleons darting in and out of the stones and shadows near a jungle glade. If you like burley forward blends, this is a must try. Nutty and toasty with just enough Virginia for a faint hint of sweetness. The perique is subtle in this one and comes off with an occasional pepper taste. It’s an almost daily smoke for me. It is a nicotine bomb though. I have a high tolerance and I will get the sweats from this one if I rush the cadence. If you are a heavy cigarette smoker looking to make the transition to pipes, this would be a good blend to try....Read More

Cornell & Diehl Old Joe Krantz is a fantastic American Burley blend—bold, earthy, spicy, and deeply satisfying.

The Burley provides the heart of the experience with plenty of nuttiness, earth, cocoa, and that dry, slightly rugged character I enjoy in a traditional American mixture. The Virginia adds a touch of natural sweetness, while the Perique brings pepper, dark fruit, and enough spice to keep the blend lively throughout the bowl.

What I appreciate most is that Old Joe Krantz does not try to be delicate. It has real presence. The flavors are robust and tobacco-forward, but they remain balanced rather than chaotic. Smoked slowly, the nuttiness deepens, the spice becomes more integrated, and the blend develops a rich, almost old-fashioned character that feels wonderfully honest.

This is the kind of tobacco that reminds me why I enjoy Burley so much. It is strong enough to satisfy, complex enough to stay interesting, and distinctive enough to earn a permanent place in the rotation.

Leather and dirt.

Wow. It’s Burley, alright, but dark, earthy, and almost leathery. Maybe even a little rubbery. I’m getting straight-up soil from this tobacco. Unlike a lot of Burley blends, there isn’t much sweetness or nuttiness here. Instead, it’s leather and earth from the start.

There’s also a peppery quality on the retrohale that I’m assuming is the Perique making itself known. But the dominant flavor is unmistakably leather. I taste leather. A lot of leather.

This is probably going to be a very pleasant tobacco for someone whose palate is better suited to this sort of thing. For me, though, it’s a little rough. Not offensive, exactly, it just has some serious attitude. This is a bold one....Read More
