An average mild English

This one’s a bit mild for my tastes. It’s not bad, just nothing special. I can think of a half dozen other mild English tobaccos I’d reach for. 3.5 Stars.

Stratfordshire
Smoking Pipes rated 4.1

This English ribbon is a beautiful mélange of browns and black, and is deliciously composed of Virginia, Latakia, Oriental and Black Cavendish. It offers aromas of leather, cotton , vinegar, oak / wood - something
"sweet" somewhere.

Sampled in a MM Missouri Pride.

Interesting to me that this blend follows Star of the East - mainly because its just serendipity - they are both rated 4.1, and they fall this way alphabetically within the rating tier - and Stratfotshire has the same components as STOE , plus the addition of black cavendish.

Not going to lie - I thought that the addition of the black cav might hurt the blend - I can't seem to get set with if I like it or hate it sometimes - but this sampling shows it's the right answer for a question that was not even asked.

This blend is softer than STOE - either because of the black cav or maybe the latakia and or Orientals were tweaked - but it's a welcome softness. Whereas when I sample STOE I said " Man, i like this", when I sampled Stratforshire I said " Oh - damn! This is GOOD!"

The Virginias also seem more prominent here - tangy and sweet and fragrant while wearing the smoke leather of the latakia like a bathrobe. Noce thick fragrant smoke here ,and on the retro hale it's a but sharper to the nose than it into the sipped sampling.

I say it is softer - and it is - and it's kind of a "less is more" result - like the sum of all these parts exceeds that of STOE. Its only fitting if STOE was a 4, this would have to rate a point higher. This is good - I'll cellar some for sure.

My rating: 5

This is the 62nd of 101 blends I am reviewing for this project.

2026 Review: Three years ago (2023) I did not like it. Rated only 2.5 stars then. It has improved with a little age. Flavors have melded and mellowed. Virginias seem softer and sweeter, a better partner for the orientals. Latakia has less creosote, which is a good thing IMO. My major gripe is the cavendish. There is too much of it, and it is full of glycol or glycerine. Stratfordshire could be a 4-star blend without that crap. As it is, I rate it somewhere between 3 and 3.5, maybe three and a quarter....Read More

A fine English blend filling the mouth full of banana nut bread and blueberry muffins. Those are the flavors pulled from this tobacco after cellaring for about 8 months, delicious.
