About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in Kendal, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has fashioned quality pipe tobacco since 1887, utilizing processes and techniques that date to 1792. The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Kendal Gold is a traditional, pure Virginia blend, showcasing smooth, Bright and Golden Virginias for a flavor profile that highlights the varietal's natural essence. While Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has traditionally only offered shag-cut versions of their blends to the U.S. market, this Vintage Cut edition presents Kendal Gold in a classic ribbon format.

Again, with full apologies and pardons from much wiser and learned pipe smokers in the community, I followed the advice of some more experienced than myself and decided to try some "pure specimens". This is the advice that tells you to smoke plain (unblended) Virginias, plain Kentuckys, plain Burleys, etc. (you get the picture) for you to develop your own "smoker's palate wisdom" and understand what you like or not (e.g. Latakias, Orientals, Periques, etc.) Ok, so I did. I loved the smell of this Virginia even before opening the bag (bulk). Beautiful. At once I thought, this smells like something I might want to smoke as a roll your own (been thinking about that for a while but had no idea where to get appropriate tobacco for that). Anyway, this smelled superb like good tobacco was supposed to smell. Then I lit up my pipe. Where did the tobacco go ??? Nothing there. Hot air (not hot, I don't rush the pipe and I keep my hand on it, so I know). Just smoke. Just smoke. Why would I want to buy and light this ? It was not even worth cleaning my pipe. (I did. God forbid.) So, once again, disappointed. It still smells great and I am still looking forward to rolling it and smoking it like an old fashioned cowboy cigarette. Not worth having to clean my pipe for it. Where, oh where, did the tobacco go ? Again, with all due and proper respects for my all my seniors in knowledge. Edit/Update: Eventually used it as a blend in for some aromatics to increase their tobacco character with excellent results. Still looking forward to rolling it....Read More

Can't get away from this one

I'm typically a smoker of many tobaccos, styles and cuts. Somehow I have become so drawn to this one that it has become my morning smoke on my drive to work and fairly often my afternoon smoke as well. If fairs really well on the hot days. Something about pulling this messy long string cut out of the jar and packing the bowl with a mess of scraps all over my counter. It's becoming a ritualistic pleasure. Gives a really sweet draw from the start and just a touch of that nice hay flavor that does not overpower at all. This one smokes down to the ash very well with few if any relights and usually with no bitter ending. The bowl burns fast so packing it just right, full and mid compacted will give me just the right amount for my 20 minute drive to the office. It just tastes better than any other virginia I have tried. I will likely keep this one on my counter at all times....Read More

G and H never seem to let the piper down. Delicious bright Virginia blend, a bit of lemony citrus, and almost, honey like sweetness. Very smooth and pleasant. All day long, this one.

As with everything the Gawith companies do, Kendal Gold and Kendal Gold Vintage Cut are magnificent. Sweet and bright, fragrant and flavorful, a joy for the smoker and those around him. It's light in both body and nicotine, so it can be enjoyed all day every day. Upon opening the bag, you will note right away the quality for which Gawith is known. While Brights and Goldens are princes of the Virginia varieties, they can be mistreated or mishandled, leading to some less than desireable outcomes. But Gawith knows exactly what they're doing.
