A taste from a bygone era

ing for a sailor to come and cut a pinch off. Their daily ration of grog being the only beverage adequate to stand up to the strength of this stuff. It smells like a leather combat boot from the army surplus. After prepping the smell sticks to my hand. A gentle reminder that I have some drying out in anticipation of a quiet half hour in the backyard. I wouldn’t call this an everyday smoke, nor would I even think about trying this first thing in the morning or on an empty stomach. There’s some real history here. Hard not to be romantic about a company that holds roots in the Napoleonic era. Made using machinery from the Industrial Revolution. This tobacco reminds me why I smoke pipes. I smoke this in a small cob, as I haven’t yet summoned the courage to try in a larger briar. I can only imagine how fast this would get me kicked out of the pub. Probably not for indoor use. I’ve been using kitchen shears to cut off a coin, then rub out while repeatedly smelling my work as I go. I ordered 4oz and was pleasantly surprised at the volume I was sent. Thinking in cigar terms it was the equivalent of one robusto and two churchills, all at about a 50 ring gauge. So this will last a good long while. I’ll bet this will age beautifully. Maybe I’ll smoke the robusto sized rope and put back the two churchills for aging. Smoking this makes me want to watch master and commander or mutiny on the bounty. G&H are truly a cut above the rest. Satis facere...Read More

sure ain’t Peterson Sweet Killarney, for example, but it’s not supposed to be an aromatic. Prepared by cutting into coins, and then shag-cutting, with no drying. Lights and stays lit well. Like all such ropes, it’s strong, and not for new smokers at all. Smokey as expected, with a wonderful maple topping. Not complex. You could talk me into a 4.5 rating, but being torn, and the rating here being way too low, I went with 5....Read More

s different than picture in the photo, it’s much darker, dark brown, almost black. It is also spun like a straight line, not a circle like it used to be. It would only be right for retailers to update photos on all twists. It is not a strong smoke, it lacks in nicotine compared to sweet maple twist. The tobacco is easy to cut into coins, rub out and it needs very little dry time - half an hour will do. Twist burns quick with very little relights. Flavour is mild and boring, it lacks complexity. Not gonna buy again....Read More
Maple sugar not maple flavoring.

to lean toward, and almost have, a medium topping.
This is really smooth despite a maple sugar topping which usually translates to tongue bite. Not here, the maple sugar wafts in and out without any bite at all.
This seems a bit more on the milder side compared to the other brown irish X incarnations, but is still a strong smoke. Nicotine is pretty steady and doesn't build like it does in the cherry twist.
Maple twist is a little bit more pale or brighter colored compared with the other flavored ropes.
Has a little bit better of a room note compared to the regular brown irish X.
If it dries out too much it gets even smoother but the topping is lost in the sharper smoke.
I found that the best way to preserve the maple sugar is to not cut the coins too thin, about 3/16" is best, then lightly rub them out and pack.
Ropes have easy burning tobacco so can be smoked very coarse if one wants to taste the topping more strongly.
This has a bit of an old school quality about it and there is a small amount of jaffna (the strongest non-rustica strain) called dark indian air cured weaving in and out, but is mostly fire cured as stated.
The underlying tobacco has some sweetness to it on top of the topping which makes for a really nice aftertaste, which is what these ropes are famous for in addition to the strength.
I haven't had any G&W rope leave any goop or moisture to speak of in most of my pipes after being dried properly, which is pretty rare in pipe tobacco.
If you haven't tried this, it is a must. If you want your tobacco to taste like tobacco but have a something extra in it, this is going to be about perfect....Read More

This is so good you can’t find it. I’ve been trying for over three years. If you hear anything about where to buy it at any of the dozens of online tobacco stores, then please let me know. Good luck.
