About This Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

An English blend that highlights Oriental tobaccos, Samuel Gawith's Skiff Mixture features flue-cured tobaccos, with Virginias and Latakia combining with Turkish leaf. Such a blend offers a smooth smooth and natural flavor with an Orientals-forward profile.

Product: Samuel Gawith Skiff Mixture 50g
One of my favorites. This blend is another fine example of the countless exceptional blends from Samuel Gawith.
This blend is exactly what is supposed to be, a lovely oriental forward English. I consider this an any day and any time smoke.
I find it to be a very soft English, a good entry poi
nt for folks new to English blends. And an excellent smoke for the discerning pipe smoker....Read More

I would call it Oriental – light Balkan type of tobacco. It belongs to the same genre as another classic – McConnell Original Oriental. Only in McConnell the Oriental/Turkish takes the whole front stage while in Skiff Mixture this place is taken by the interplay between Virginia and Turkish. That what I believe makes the blend so tasty and good as well as superior to Original Oriental. Latakia though present throughout stays on background. Tobacco taste is sweet and spicy. Delicious altogether. My problem with this blend lies in its strength or to be more precise in its lack of it. In 2012 I thought it to be mild to moderate in strength and this blend was one of three morning tobaccos of mine. But with passing of time perception changes as well. Today I believe this blend to be somewhere between very mild and mild and after long consideration and additional tins of course removed Skiff from rotation on basis of strength. Nevertheless, as I already mentioned it is a very good tobacco which I would strongly recommend to anyone who is into Oriental blends or prefer mild English blends....Read More

I picked up Skiff while still first infatuated with EMP. From what was purported in online forums/reviews, this blend featured some of the same flavors as EMP, with a subtle increase in strength. The first bowl was great, better than expected. The sourness mentioned in other reviews on this page was indeed present, and was delicious to me in that moment. The second and third bowl were just as enjoyable, and at that time I would have rated this blend among my top three. But by the fourth, something started to change. The pipe I used to smoke Skiff became haunted, though the word "ghosting" seems too light a term to describe the phenomenon I experienced. Rather, every bowl smoked in that pipe thereafter was presided over by the Skiff Phantom. Anything smoked in the pipe, any blend whatsoever, tasted like Skiff. Hell, even when I smoked Skiff in that pipe, it somehow tasted more like Skiff, its sour charm bolstered by its phantom in the pipe, intensifying into a pungent soapiness. The pipe has since been decommissioned, as even a draw on an empty bowl delivers that soapy-sour Skiff flavor. I still have most of the tin, and will likely give it a few more months before trying it again. I suspect, however, that this blend will ultimately end up in the garbage....Read More

It bites me every time I smoke it. And the flavor is too mild and bland to put up with the bite.
