Sandblasted Bent Egg Tobacco Pipe

Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but as a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2026, the theme of our Expo is "The Art of the Sandblast," celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship behind one of the most meticulous finishing techniques in pipe making. Through the sandblast, these artisans transform the natural grain of briar into textured works of art, highlighting the unique character of each block and demonstrating the artistry of the technique.

Scott Thile's self-described style can be summed up as "Danish neoclassics as interpreted by the North American greats." With his years of experience — some as an autodidact and some under the mentorship of Bruce Weaver and Todd Johnson — it's safe to say that Thile has carved out a space of his own among the North American greats, and he has presented us with a lovely bent Egg for this year's Expo.

Showcasing graceful, gestural curves and a few well-placed, crisply rendered ridgelines throughout, this bent Egg's shaping is every bit as handsome as its contrast sandblast — the main focus of this piece, naturally. But Thile's thoughtful shaping cues are also worth noting, from the crisp-edged, steeply sloping rim to the bowing ridgelines that flow seamlessly from the shoulders of the stylized, half-saddle stem into the sides of the shank. These flourishes are elevated by the briar's contrast sandblast, whose texture is somewhat low-profile and reserved while still revealing impressive swaths of ring grain and tendrils of flame grain with stunning clarity. Crisp yet gentle, both in shaping and to the touch, this is an excellent show of craftsmanship from Thile all around.
