Smooth Calabash with Sandblasted Sucupira and 18k Golden Dots Tobacco Pipe

Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but as a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2026, the theme of our Expo is "The Art of the Sandblast," celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship behind one of the most meticulous finishing techniques in pipe making. Through the sandblast, these artisans transform the natural grain of briar into textured works of art, highlighting the unique character of each block and demonstrating the artistry of the technique.

MarTelo brings inspiration from his hometown into each of his designs, and his submission for our 2026 Expo is no exception. This eye-catching Calabash is the first we've received from the artisan, staying true to the classic profile while incorporating stylistic nods to Hiroyuki Tokutomi and Bo Nordh. The result is a refined Danish-style take on the shape, with the pronounced yet graceful curves that make the Calabash so distinctive.

The composition features sinuous linework throughout, with each section of briar beautifully displaying tendrils of cohesive flame grain. What immediately captures the eye is the removable cap, typically crafted from meerschaum, but here rendered in Sucupira, a Brazilian hardwood that serves as a fitting nod to marTelo's roots. In keeping with the theme of the Expo, marTelo sandblasted the Sucupira, revealing distinct grain that gives the cap an almost volcanic texture. Small details of 18k gold are set along the cap, adding a subtle touch of shine to the palette while remaining soft-spoken.
