Sandblasted Skater with Tiger Wood Tobacco Pipe

Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but as a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2026, the theme of our Expo is "The Art of the Sandblast," celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship behind one of the most meticulous finishing techniques in pipe making. Through the sandblast, these artisans transform the natural grain of briar into textured works of art, highlighting the unique character of each block and demonstrating the artistry of the technique.

Boasting over a decade of experience and a highly diverse portfolio, Silver Gray is an American artisan who prioritizes both form and function to the highest extent. She's been known to craft quite a few signature shapes, and her work often incorporates unique, unconventional materials. Silver's contribution to this year's Expo, a sandblasted Skater adorned with tiger wood, demonstrates not only her penchant for using unconventional materials, but also her imaginative approach to traditional finishing techniques. Save for the underside of the bowl and the smooth, lenticular rim, which showcases an impressive swath of birdseye, the stummel wears an excellent sandblast that reveals the briar's web of ring grain and flame grain in vivid detail. This pipe's rugged, organic texture doesn't stop there, though; Silver has also opted to rusticate and sandblast a portion of the stem, bridging the gap between the briar, tiger wood, and vulcanite with a pleasing sense of textural unity. These materials are also quite tonally complementary, with the deep auburn hue of the stummel pairing handsomely with both the warmer-toned tiger wood and similarly colored stem.

Every bit as striking in shaping as it is in finish, this Skater offers an excellent demonstration of Silver's distinct carving style. The bowl's pointed heel is exceptionally crisp, framed by a pair of parallel, arcing ridgelines on each side that create a drooping effect while still retaining a thoroughly rigid appearance overall. The diamond shank demonstrates even more rigid shaping, and it's joined by a downturned, half-saddle stem featuring a pair of parallel ridgelines on each side that are similar to those framing the heel of the bowl. Speaking of the bowl, Silver added one last charming touch to this piece, stamping the underside to read "Smokingpipes.com International Pipe Making Exposition" followed by her name and the year.
